Ok so something has been eating my brain lately about the design and personality of Lyla in Across The Spiderverse
In the comics, we know that Lyla resembles Marilyn Monroe. We also know that Xina Kwan, one of Miguel’s lover and best friend, had the iconic woman tattooed on her stomach because she related to her. Gorgeous and Brainy.
Xina is known to be very witty, smart and sassy. She isn’t afraid to speak her mind and has no time for bullshit. Lyla in the film obviously shows this kind of behaviour, teasing him and her sassy antics.
Appearance wise, although she doesn’t resemble Lyla in the comics, she does resemble Xina with the Asian features with a mix of the white attire Monroe is known for.
Therefore, I’m thinking… what if Miguel designed Lyla to resemble Xina with Monroe inspired fashion?? What if his ex wife was Xina, who also passed away??? So this is a way to honour her and keep her with him at all times. He never brought her up so that’s why I’m making the assumption she’s not here (or he’s co-parenting, single dad raising a daughter).
It may be a bit of a stretch but there has to be a reason why the designers and directors decided to go with her movie design…. OR THEY ARE TRYING TO AVOID THE MONROE TROPE AND IM THINKING WAAAAY TOO HARD OVER THIS LOL DAM.
Update: Or?? He kept Lyla because Xina technically created her, and he wanted to keep her around in memory of her whether she’s alive or not.
