The Hollow Moon/Spaceship Moon Theory
As the title suggests, this is the conspiracy that the moon is actually hollow, have the possible internal structure of a spaceship and may be inhabited by Aliens. Seismic observations suggests a thin crust surrounds the moon and the theory exists for a number of reasons, presented here:
Doubts
- Suniti Karunatillake suggests there are two methods to ‘prove the moon isn’t hollow’, through seismic observations (which have shown the thickness of the moons crust, core and mantle suggesting it couldn’t be hollow)and moment of inertia parameters (which tells the moons core is dense and small, with the moon made of material with nearly constant density
- Fine scale variation of the lunar gravitational field further elicits a crust, mantle and core.
- Scientists state the internal structure of the moon to be: the crust, the mantle, partial mantle fluid outer core and solid inner core.
- The theory appears to be very similar to the disproved Hollow earth theory
- The concept was first mentioned in literature and most well known in H.G.Well’s ‘The first men in the moon’, Ludwig Holberg’s ‘Niels Kim’s underground travels’ and Edmond Haley’s Hypothesis
- In relation to the ringing moon, (where seismometers recorded ringing sounds after a moonquake for up to an hour) the argument exist that due to the differences in the planets density (moon is 3.3 g/cm3 earth is 5.5 g/cm3) and texture, moonquakes will result differently than earthquakes and does not necessarily suggest that the moon is hollow. Minimal evidence and exploration exists on both sides as to why the ringing noise could be heard)
- The concept has been summarised as a fringe theory by scientists

- From 1972 to 1977 seismometers recorded ringing noises (like a bell) from the moon after a moon quake, this suggests a hollow internal structure and although scientists provide explanation, little evidence has been produced to back this up
- There are two ways that planets acquire moons, through accretion or capture. Accretion is where a moon develops alongside a planet and has been dismissed as the core composition and minerals composed on the moon and earths surface differ. This leaves capture, where the moon entered the planet obituary system and this backs up the theory as at the speed and angle of which our moon entered our orbit positively affected our axial tilt and thereby our climatic stability allowing for the life we have we have on this planet. The probability of this is unlikely and therefore many argue was planned or controlled by other life
- The size of the moon is one of the biggest space anomalies to date, it is expected to have a 40 mile diameter but actually has a 2,000 miles, suggesting many areas are unexplored and could be inhabitable
- The moon may have been habitable about four billion years ago, if only briefly, according to two senior planetary researchers
- Zulu legend states that ‘scaly, fish men put the moon in place’ and in Greek mythology Hades states the moon is hollow, perhaps this is not literature but recordings of history
- Water vapour has been found trapped in rock samples gathered from the moons surface and upon analysis, scientists believe 600 million tons of water to be trapped in craters. NASA made claims when finding a large area of cater vapour on the moons surface that it was exploded water tanks, however, they only contained 60-100 pound of water when the vapour covered 100 square miles for 14 hours before dissaporating. The analysis of the rock matter also took 40 years which many remain highly suspicious about as it should not have taken any where near that long. Further theorists conclude that an internal water storage on the moon could be accredited
As you can see, both sides have a range of arguments, but further research and evidence will need to be provided by either side for a conclusive ending. Right now, as to whether the moon is hollow or not, remains a mystery.
