(again, DRV3 spoilers under the cut, which probably won’t appear if you’re on mobile because it’s garbage.)
Apparently in the investigation Iruma called Saihara "ショボ探偵". I have no idea what that means. Man, I can't imagine listening to that creepy song at 3AM. You're brave. Yumeno's also started calling Tenko by her first name, the first instance of which I could find was right after the candles were relighted. Too bad Tenko's already dead :/
Hmm, the only thing I can think of is that it might be something like “shabby(/dull) detective”, which is way less rude than what she said in English. Interesting! Thanks for sharing. :D
I’m not really that brave! I work 3rd shift, so I’m pretty much always awake at 3 AM doing whatever anyway. :)
Aww, I was wondering about that. I did hear her call her Tenko when she ran to lift the cage and I assumed she hadn’t been calling her that before, but I wasn’t sure. But yeah, she’s already dead, so Tenko can’t really appreciate the change...
I remember seriously thinking it'd be a three-victim chapter when that "It's a lie!" moment happened. I'm sad the students apparently didn't care that he was bleeding out and probably concussed... someone help this boy Chapter 3 introduced such an interesting rule with the "only the first murderer counts as the blackened" thing, but they didn't use it after all... Imagine the possibilities if they discovered two culprits in the trial! It's such a waste.
Yeah, I thought one of them would at least ask if he was okay? But no one even cared...
It is an interesting rule! And a waste, like you said, since there was just the one murder.
Oh, the rock thing at this point is a bit funny in Japanese. But it might be spoilery if you haven't completely guessed what its message is yet. Also, Ouma uses 好きになった人 in the salon. I'm bad at identifying nuances in Japanese, but I think most people have taken it as a confession there. What do you think?
I just saw the whole message in English (unless there’s more to it after the end of Chapter 4), so I’d be interested in seeing the Japanese version if it’s not too much of a hassle for you! :o
I can definitely see how people would take that as a confession, since they could have easily used different phrasing to avoid any kind of romantic interpretation there. :/a I’d say it’s ambiguous and could be interpreted either way, maybe? But my opinion on that could change.
This trial was wild. I remember being skeptical that it could be Momota simply because I didn't think he would be able to act like Ouma for so long XD At first I didn't get why Ouma took off his shirt either. Or why he even filmed the video. Now I think that he *did* want the case to be solved somehow, because if he hadn't done those things, I doubt Saihara would've been able to figure out the trick.
Haha, it is pretty hard to believe, even with a script. :P
It’s possible he did it intentionally! It’s hard to know with him...
It would make sense either way--the shirt being found and the video were both part of what made it ambiguous as to who it was under the press, but like you said, they both also helped Shuichi figure things out. And Kokichi definitely knows that Shuichi’s the type to ~pursue the truth~ to the end, so I don’t think he’d overlook that.
Ah, there's also been some debate about the line where Ouma says he can't find a game that he's forced to play fun. The original line is 人にやらされるゲームなんて…楽しい訳あるかよ One alt translation I found is "As if there could ever be any fun…in a game like this where you take people’s lives…". Basically interpreting やらされる as the causative-passive of 殺る. This seems to tie better with the "toying with our lives" remark later, but I can also see why it was translated as "forced to play".
Oh, that’s really interesting! o:
On the whiteboard, Saihara's "trustworthy?" in EN and 油断ならない? in JP.The motive video's translation cuts out the fact that DICE is explicitly against murder. The original line was 「人を殺さない」かつ「笑える犯罪」をモットに、愉快犯的な犯行を繰り返すDICEには… I don't know why they cut it out, considering Saihara even says it in the trial, except with the line cut out it feels more like he's extrapolating when he's actually just stating a fact.
That is definitely a weird thing to cut out, because it’s actually important and it’s explicitly there, like you said. What in the world made them make that decision... o_o
Also aw, that part of the whiteboard’s not as cute now. That’s okay, though, it’s better to know~
I'm sorry the whole thing bored you to the point that you started talking about your trip (and this is one loooooong trial) but I hope you have fun in Japan! If you're in Tokyo, you can get almost anywhere using the trains, and you can more or less use Google Maps to navigate the complicated train system.
Hey, it’s okay! It’s not like you put that twist in there, haha. That’s really good to know about Google Maps, thanks! c: (Also, thank you for the playlist! I’ll definitely check it out later!)
Speaking of the end, though, I did have this post and I’m not sure if the link worked or not when the post was first up. If it didn’t it probably looked like I just quit the game before it was actually over, which I didn’t do. orz
chemicalnimu replied to your post “ch6”
Yeah that was it basically :/ I like to pretend this chapter never happened...or something. Eh. I'm sorry you got to the point of "so done with this I'm gonna talk about my trip instead" because it's not a good feeling to have, but it was fun to see :D & I hope you have fun in Japan and eat lots of delicious food~ I have thoughts about the game, but well, in a nutshell - same. Writing here is a pain due to character limit so maybe I'll PM a bit later
That’s probably what I’ll end up doing, honestly! We can ignore its existence together~
And it’s okay! I’m glad it was at least fun to see, haha. :P I realized it was either me doing that or whining about it the whole time (or just posting screenshots without anything between them at all), and I didn’t want to just be whining and negative, so... that’s what I ended up with. (& thanks!)
If you feel up to it I’d love to talk about it with you and hear your thoughts about it! c:
(Also, there was a post that might not have been accessible when the post was first up, so I did really finish the game if it didn’t seem like I did!)
tarifu replied to your post “[[MOR] Shuichi does this and then it’s voting time. Tsumugi says she...”
yep, pretty much the same reasons that made you check out was what annoyed me lol! so pointless. anyway i hope you have fun on your Japan trip!! it sounds so fun, i hope you post about it! ^^ i was the same about fish too, i didn't really like it, but when I was in Japan the family i was with took me to a sushi bar and i couldn't stop eating it lol! it's what made me like fish, so maybe that will happen to you! i hope you try at least a bite ^^
I guess I’m glad I’m not the only one. :P
Thanks! I’ll definitely be posting about it! :D And that’s interesting about fish, maybe I’ll actually try some while I’m there and see if it changes anything! If I nothing else I can probably convince my sister to let me try some kind of fish she orders, haha.
No problem! I understand what it's like to want to check a line in the original version. If you want, I can give you a link to a JPN playthrough that I've been using to check, after you're done with the game. That playlist is helpful but the vids aren't split by chapter so it's easy to get spoiled if you skip around in them. For what Ouma calls Gonta, it's actually just his first name, no changes. Because his name is spelt 獄原 ゴン太, katakana and all.
Oh, that would be great, thanks! :D
And ooh, I see. I didn’t know he had the kanji in his name.
chemicalnimu replied to your post “ch5 (pt2)”
Haha you found that inconsistent part about the hand in the sleeve! It bothered me too when I first played and later I learned that it was a localization error (they re-drew this CG a bit) in the original the hand was positioned close to the body so the transition in the video was pretty smooth. Also that's a horrible way to go...probably quick and better than being stuck with torture poison but still *shudders* that's some dedication. Too bad it was all for nothing.
They redrew it...? o_O That’s weird.
Yeah, it’s definitely not a good way to die, but there aren’t many actually good ways to die. >_> It makes me sad he had to do all that while being poisoned, poor little guy.
Actually now I’m thinking about it more and I’m really sad, haha... what the heck. :c
again, spoilers under the read more that doesn’t show up on mobile
chemicalnimu replied to your post “ch5 (pt1)”
Oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy. Getting close to the end! The Gopher project is really...stupid idea and I absolutely agree on all of the points made. They really really are unfit for this...
\o/ Yay!
Haha, I’m glad other people think it’s stupid, too. I just don’t understand why anyone would ever think that’s a good idea... If anything, you’d probably want mostly preexisting family units and/or couples, you definitely don’t want a bunch of hormonal teenagers trying to restart humanity on some random planet! And they probably should’ve sent out more than one group, too, because what if something happened (like it did)... Why...
ringo-boshi replied to your post “(again, DRV3 spoilers under the cut, which probably won’t appear if...”
Ah, right, so the funny part is that at that point in time, the rock said このせかいは/うま/もの (slashes are spaces). The full message was このせかいはおうまこきちのもの, if you're curious.
Ha! That’s funny. It’s cute that they managed to keep “horse” that first time when they changed it to English, too, since the “uma” is there the second time things get added in Japanese. Thank you for letting me know! :D
It's been super interesting seeing your reactions to the stuff in this chapter. Ouma refers to Gonta as ゴン太, and he calls Kiibo キー坊. I think Angie was アンジーちゃん too. Oh holy crap that Ouma screenshot. Yup, Momota's back to calling him Saihara! It's even emphasised with quotation marks in the JPN version.
Oh, neat! That explains why they translate it as “Kee-boy”, then, though I guess they didn’t even bother trying to come up with something for Gonta... And I think you’re right about Angie, I feel like he said that during one of the trials and I just forgot about it (oops). Thanks!
Haha, the red one? I’m glad I managed to catch it without text. c:
Yay, I guessed correctly! With the way they translated it/made everyone call each other by their first names, it doesn’t really work as well since Kaito has still called Shuichi by his first name even after he started calling him “bro” in the English translation...
I just want to say you have possibly the chillest reactions ever to Ouma's faces, haha. Also agreed on all your points about how the Gofer project is stupid. Abt Momota wanting everyone to die rather than have Gonta be the culprit... there was actually a line in Chapter 2's trial that was cut out from the NISA text (but still in the JPN sound file), but he says, about his hunch: テメーらの命を懸ける価値は十分にあるぜ. And then Chapter 4 happens. I thought it was an interesting parallel!
He’s got so many different interesting expressions! c:
I can’t believe Naegi was partially responsible for that project... It’s such a bad idea.
Oh, that is interesting about Kaito’s line! o: I wonder why it got cut from the translated text...
Another name thing: Momota's nickname for Maki in Japanese is Harumaki/Spring Roll. I think that's really cute. Also, I'm glad at least this time around they let you skip the 'Something of Man's Passion' stupid fanservice scene. Would be better if they didn't put it in at all, but like the underwear, it unfortunately seems to be a series tradition at this point.
I just got to the trial and heard him say it, that’s a really cute nickname! :D I wish they’d just kept that as her nickname in the translation, it’s not like it would’ve been hard to understand...
And yeah, I was worried they wouldn’t let me skip it, so I was really surprised it let me get away with just saying “no” like that. Small mercies!
There are spoilers in these replies, so don’t read this if you want to avoid that!
I don’t know why Tumblr is incapable of being consistent between mobile and desktop versions as far as cuts/read mores go, but I can’t fix it. There is a “read more” here so people can avoid spoilers, but it probably won’t work for you if you’re on a phone.
Kaede's such an awesome character and I'm still sad she got fridged :(
I wish she could’ve stuck around at least a little longer... It’s not like the game needed a “surprise twist” protagonist change right at the start like that.
In Ouma's second free time, apparently he says that he wants to play a "Shadow/dark game" with Saihara (このオレと闇のゲームで勝負だ!) and that the loser has to play a punishment game (負けたヤツには罰ゲームを受けて貰う). I guess the localisation saw the Shadow Game thing and made a Shadow Realm joke?
Oh! Neat, thanks! Shadow games are also a Yu-Gi-Oh thing, though I don’t know if they’re used in other stuff because I don’t really watch anime like that. That’s actually pretty funny, then, because in English (Yu-Gi-Oh) they just go to the ~Shadow Realm~ but in Japanese they do have to play a penalty/punishment game if they lose, so it’s like a bonus localization joke... thing. Also, this just makes me think that Kokichi is a huge nerd.
Oh! Also, if you're interested in name basis stuff, Momota just changed from calling Saihara by his last name to calling him "Shuuichi" in that training session!
I am interested in name stuff, thanks! :D I try to pay attention whenever they speak, but since the localization changed a lot of name stuff in the text, it’s easy to miss things like that... I kind of hate how they start everyone off using first names, honestly.
Haha, I like how you're documenting Ouma's nightmare faces. Agreed with Tojo's Argument Armament and execution being horrible, though. Kaede's Argument Armament wasn't as bad, surely they could have done the same to Tojo? And I understand the concept of her execution, to show how determined she is, but the excessive clothing damage was just... no.
He has a lot of interesting faces! :D And yeah, they did okay with Kaede’s, so I don’t know why they had to go that far...
With regards to the execution, I would’ve been totally okay with it if the saws hadn’t just “conveniently” stripped her of her clothing and given her tiny baby cuts, honestly.
chemicalnimu replied to your post “ch2 (pt2)”
Kirumi really gets the worst of it I think... I hated that execution with burning passion. It doesn't get worse than that though. I also don't remember DR1 being so horrible with female characters... Somewhere along the line things got way bad. & I just can't handle Miu. Just. No. Why.
That’s good to know, I guess! Thanks! It sucks that she got treated that way, but if that’s the worst of it I can deal with it...
The first game treated its female characters with respect for the most part, from what I remember (or at least with the same amount of respect as the guys got). Especially Sakura, who could’ve been treated like a huge joke but wasn’t at all.
And yeah, Miu is... the designated “wow look at this disgusting nasty girl” character in the game, I guess. Even the first DR game had one of those (Fukawa), even if she was treated better than the ones in the other games.
And I really didn’t need to see her in her underwear!
Several hours later I thought of another thing to say! I really love Gonna, he's absolutely precious but I fear bugs to almost irrational degrees. So. Much. Nope. The whole insect meet and greet is a nightmare scenario for me... So the students reactions hit me as pretty accurate and relatable haha :') love how Kokichi got a taste of his medicine and was left with bugs...screaming... Seriously though this IS hell.
Haha, that’s understandable! Honestly, I’m fine with bugs in a controlled environment, but they were just swarming all over the place and I think that’d be too much for anyone (except for Gonta, apparently). And yeah, it’s good that Kokichi at least got stuck in there to deal with what he put the others through. :P
tarifu replied to your post “[[MOR] tarifu replied to your post “ch1” oh, i didn’t notice that...”
i haven't read much about it, only that i have heard that the despair girls game is Especially Bad, even from big DR fans, so lol! that little factoid is horrendous! and there's going to be a despair girls sequel afaik!! lol!!!!!! i have a lot of Opinions but i don't want to say something and inadvertently spoil, so, later, i will text dump
Yeah, there was a poster for a sequel in this game, so if there is one being made it wouldn’t be too surprising. :/ The LP I read thankfully cut out all of the pantyshots (and the terrible minigame), but even knowing they’re there is just... why. No one needs that.
I look forward to seeing your opinions once you’re able to share them!
Not sure if this helps, but I think the article is referring to Komaeda himself. The tweet says "the protagonist, Komaeda (has become) a normal boy!?" I'm guessing on the verb there because they dropped it in that sentence (which is p common in promotional stuff). The link in the tweet gives more info, something like "In this anime, the protag Komaeda appears as a normal boy...!?" So I'm wondering if that Hinata is the real Hinata or a part of this illusion/coma/NWP that Komaeda himself created.
Ah, thank you for the specific translation!
The thing that makes me think this is an infiltration of some sort, rather then Komaeda dreaming Hinata up, is one: This seems to be reset in his memory/mind to before he met Hinata, during Despair Arc, and two, Hinata has two red eyes and doesn’t look happy about being there. So I doubt he’s ‘part of the dream’ so to speak.
I want to add, this doesn’t have to actually be induced by coma, or the NWP; Komaeda could just have gone catatonic upon waking due to the stress of it all.
I was so surprised when I came to your blog and I...
Wow I thought it was some sort of European language… although it also oddly reminded me of some kdrama insert songs. I will check out the other tracks in the ost!
Well, I know the words themselves are supposed to have Japanese influence, but the style varies from song to song. The singer was fluent in...four languages, I believe? (French, German, English, Japanese) and so some songs have completely different tones to them. Like some take more of a French style, or German, some are really bombastic and loud, others quiet and sad, it’s a really phenomenal OST and there’s really no other one quite like it.
