“Rinko!”

With a startled yelp, Rinko’s book tumble down to the ground. Face burning, she glances over her shoulder just in time to see Lisa come to a halt behind her. Rinko exhales softly. “Imai-san.”

Lisa’s eyes rake over the fallen books. Her smile falters a bit. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you. Here, let me help.”

Between the two of them, the books are deposited gently back in Rinko’s arms in short time. Once she is sure they will not come crashing down again, she offers her bandmate a small smile.

“Thank you, Imai-san. I… Did you… Was there something you needed?”

“Oh!” Lisa brightens, suddenly, with a bubbly laugh. “No, no, not at all. I just saw you walking alone and thought you might want some company. If you don’t, that’s okay too. Just say the word! Your wish is my command.”

Rinko can’t quite say why this makes her cheeks sting more fiercely. She looks steadfastly down at the books. “That’s…that’s okay. I was just going to the library.”

“Ah, so that’s what the books are for?”

“Yes… I have to return them.” Rinko sighs. “I, um…didn’t finish them all, but…”

When Rinko chances a glance up, she sees Lisa eyeing the stack with pursed lips. Perhaps catching Rinko looking, they twist into an amicable grin.

“That is a lot of reading,” she says. “Can I help you carry some?”

Rinko learned long ago not to deny Lisa the opportunity to help out with something. Wordlessly, she holds the books out between them and lets Lisa take the top half. That done, she turns and begins walking; Rinko blinks, then hastens to catch up with her.

“I didn’t know you liked reading,” Lisa’s saying as they make their way down the sidewalk. “What kind of books are these, anyway?”

“I don’t read a whole lot,” Rinko admits softly. “They’re, um, fantasy stories. Someone recommended them on a forum, so…”

“Neat! Were they any good?”

“The, ah…the ones I finished, yes.”

Lisa chuckles. “Well, there’s no point keeping up with something you’re not enjoying, right? Which ones did you like? Maybe I’ll check them out. Since we are going to the library and all.”

Rinko’s lips twitch at that. She leans down to get a glimpse at the lettering on the spines of Lisa’s books, then points out two of the titles. The longer they walk, they easier it is to explain the plots to Lisa, who nods along and oohs and aahs at the bits Rinko particularly enjoyed herself. Though hardly endowed with the gift of story-telling, Rinko apparently manages to enthrall Lisa rather thoroughly, for she nearly walks right past the library before Rinko taps her shoulder to draw her back.

A bit sheepish, Lisa steps closer to her again. “Guess I just wasn’t paying attention. Sorry. Let’s go in!”

Rinko bites back a smile and nods, allowing Lisa to lead the way. While Rinko puts the books in the bin for returns, Lisa sets hers down on the table and tugs free the two novels Rinko told her about. The rest go in the return bit, and then she says, “I’ll just check these out, shall I?”

“You don’t have to read them, Imai-san.”

With one foot half in the air, Lisa stops and whirls around. She shakes her head in response to Rinko’s frown.

“I know that,” she says. “But I want to! You made them sound really good. Besides, I’d love to hear more about what you think, and what better way to do that than to read them myself first? Just wait for me! I’ll be quick!”

And with that, she hurries away to the librarian’s desk.

Watching her go, Rinko can’t helping thinking that maybe she might like to hear Lisa’s thoughts on the books, too.
