Shout-out to the systems and plurals preparing for a new term or semester or whatever of school come this fall. We're all gonna make it through. For those of us going into new courses – we will ride the wave and things will not be so scary once we have a few classes under our belts; they will not throw everything at you all at once, so take a breath and take the class as it comes. For those of us going into crunch time or that period where every teacher reminds you every class to prepare for exams – don't stress, you've got this, just keep your head high as you study and get through the reviews. For those of us entering the middle of our school year – this time may feel like the high tide of doldrums and melancholy, and it may be hard to keep yourself going, but just keep on trekking; you'll see the finish line soon. This time may be scary, stressful, or as boring as school can ever be, but we're gonna push through and come out the other end.
I want to show you three images of me.
Take a moment to consider: Which one is the best? Which one do you think I drew?
What does art mean as a vessel for self expression and identity? We make art of each other as if our lives depended on it, it is our most precious resource. It is our only camera, our way of showing ourselves to the world that has hidden us. It is intimate, drawing the strands of hair on your loved one and commiting their lines to memory. Making or posting art of each other is something that we discuss consent around, something that is as important as posting a real photo.
But that brings up a good question, is it a photo?
Is a drawing of you the same as you? What line is there between art and reality, when our internal reality is not visual to this world? I would say that line is self designated, and that as a member of a system, not all my artistic depictions are equal to my internal self perception. The art is deeply influenced by the maker, their perception of me, and their goals for the piece. Each is an approximation, a flat frame of me in a moment and in the mind of another. As much as we consider these photographs, they aren’t made by the cold objectivity of a camera. There is a mind at work behind each.
This is not about style, but intention and presence. What intent lies behind the art? To capture me as if I was in this world, to capture my mood, to capture the intricacies of my body. There are infinite options, and each option has infinite possible resulting works.
The first portrait was intended to be grounded in this world’s reality and anatomy, and somehow, it feels devoid of all that I am. It feels like a shell, like a picture of the outside without any sort of…spirit.
The second is bright and lively and imbued with everything the first is missing. It captures my pets, my smile, and my energy, even as it forgoes the pure details of anatomy. I see this as me at my best, me as seen by my close ones.
The last picture is mine. (Did you guess right?) It is not realistic, it is deliberately absent of complication and texture. And yet, it is how I see myself at the core. This is how I saw myself when we first came up as a system. I’ve drawn in many styles, and many poses, but I feel if I had 5 minutes to draw myself and show it to someone who’d never met me, I’d draw this.
Take a moment to consider art in your& system. What sides and parts of each other do we lose when we rely solely on realism? Are we using ourselves as simple anatomy practice? What are you missing in the restless pursuit for a single style? What are you simplifying or overcomplicating?
What if we break all the fucking rules?
Tl;DR i drew a thing and felt about it. I hope this makes sense to you.

i just finished the mars house, here are some thoughts about it:
- it's so silly?? like pulley's books are always a little funny but this one is funny constantly. this is a neutral observation
- theodore sturgeon my beloved. theodore sturgeon pulley's beloved. i feel like we're all holding hands and debating gender over a slice of strawberry pie (i'll make an extra post about that. i'm already combing though the literaturé)
- somehow i didn't really warm up to gale. like yeah they're cool and a nerd and a sad little lump with issues but they didn't hit as hard as some other protags -- but i didn't really warm up to mori until pepperharrow came out either soooo
- wasn't as new wave-ish as i imagined it would be, i thought it'd be a lot more 'out there' and a little less hard sci-fi technobabble. like the gender abolition of mars or the fact that they can speak to animals ?? idk. it's not very pulley i guess but i'd have loved to see it
- how can a human being be so fucking stupid. january, love, please. i love you but please just talk to your spouse/colleague
- somehow kasha was one of those big mountain dogs in my brain. woof woof. no husky in sight
- and as always i think some of the goodreads reviewers are huffing paint because what the fuck is going on over there
