Next up in OC October - Ethen Blackwater the 3rd! (And 2nd, and 1st……) Ethen here is one of my babies; he’s a Riokuvyn. A shapeshifter species I created…many years ago. They are genderless as a norm, but take on gendered aspects when necessary. Ethen, known also as Red Fox (his Classification/Code name) and True Name is Envuoas he took the human name Ethen Blackwater a couple generations ago, and liked it so keeps using it and claiming to be the “next” Ethen Blackwater. He’s the Riokuvyn ambassador to humanity, but not all humans know that the supernatural exist. His most frequent contact is the SIF (Supernatural Investigation Force) agent Christopher Lane. They meet up over coffee (well, spiced cider for Ethen) whenever Christopher needs information. As a shapeshifter who runs an antique shop as a cover in the heart of San Francisco, Ethen knows just about everything that goes on. But he’s not one to make things easy, he’s centuries old and eternity doesn’t look to be ending any time soon, so he takes his entertainment wherever he can.

Who or what is Queen Velinu, and what is she queen of?

Velinu is a Riokuvyn, and was the Knight-Guard of the Royal Gold Bloodline. Code name was Grey Wolf until mating with Lord Reigou and gaining Silver-Eyes, thus changing the code name to Silver Wolf. Riokuvyn don’t really have genders, but since humans do and they spend a lot of time in mostly-human-like-forms, and Velinu is the one who “birthed” Lordling Vinri, ze’s referred to as Queen and Mother. Reigou, Lord and last of the Gold Bloodline (before Vinri) is the love of Velinu’s life, and that’s a long life considering ze’s been around since the early hundreds. Reigou’s been around since most ancient human civilizations.

Ze has a frosty personality on the offset, taking zir duty as Knight-Guard very very seriously. In fact, Velinu takes most things seriously. Ze’s not known for zir smile (unless Reigou is around, and then it’s like the sun came out). Zir sibling, Vercil was the Prophet of the Royal family. His (as he does prefer the male pronouns) energies and powers were all trained to seeing threats from the future. Then he saw something that shattered his belief in the Golden Line. He’s done nothing but attempt to stage a coup and overthrow Lord Reigou, even at the cost of his relationship with his sibling.

...Because once he targets Velinu’s child Vinri...there’s no forgiveness possible.

The Copper Eyes of Ethen

Copper eyes scanned all the bustling people fluttering around him at a perpetual half mast. They never change. He's torn between scoffing at their tedious lives or laughing at himself for continuing to watch.

The burn of chocolate from his morning cup provides a calming sensation as the words of a cafe-newspaper fill his vision. Black leather gloves tighten on the flimsy parchment when he sees a man harassing one of the baristas trying to take his order.

For a flicker of a moment, he contemplates doing something human. They're only a few booths over, were he to just tip his nearly full cup over it would be sure to catch attention. He could offer a fake apologetic smile as he called to the woman to help clean it up. Maybe order another vente hot chocolate just the way he always has it.

Instead his cold copper gaze drifts back to the uninteresting scribbles made out in black and white. Who was he fooling? He couldn't do that, he had to look human.
