That one time the baby woodpecker answered my question... 🥹
There was a time I was sent so many baby animals in need of help. Puppies, squirrels, bunnies, birds...
This was Benny. Benny was kicked from the nest, likely because he was blind in one eye. I also think he was hurt in the fall (very long ways down) so he could no longer fly well.
Nature is so cruel sometimes.
I spent hours trying to research what to do... to see if he would go back up the tree to home... but I couldn't find anything helpful and he couldn't make it up on his own.
Based on a previous situation with baby squirrels falling from a nest, I decided to try the bucket on a tree method to keep him safe in case parents came to get him. Sadly I knew they wouldn't.
After several calls to the local wildlife hospital over the course of 2 days, a lot of attempts to feed him and give him water with little to no luck, they finally said they would take him in.
Benny passed away the night before the trek to the hospital. Peacefully, safely, and cozily tucked in straw.
RIP Benny. Odin of the woodpecker world.
