Sooo I’ve been doing early ArtFight preparations! And a part of that process has been giving my o.c’s new Spotify playlist icons; which was a long overdue change. Adjustments were needed to reflect my current artstyle & alter some design elements (mainly for the background) to be a little less on-the-nose when it comes to the theming. Two years creates a huge difference!
Here’s the current/updated 2026 portraits:
And for the sake of showing progression—the original 2024 ones:
I enjoyed recreating them with a new spin. I feel very accomplished with how they turned out. I missed spending time developing my blorbos :))
LOOK LOOK I HAVE REVIVED OLD 2021 ART OF MY OC’S!! FOR THE SPOOKYMONTH!! MWAHAHA they’ve been resurrected from the dead >:]
(Extra info about my characters can be found below)
Oh my wonderful disastrous fictional cursed teens with trauma that I’ve neglected for years—it’s been ages since I provided any information about their storyline. I’m not going to get into the specifics right now, but essentially I created these guys MANY Octobers ago (2020) based on an Inktober prompt for the word “rip.” I didn’t read it correctly, and so I mistook “rip” for the acronym “R.I.P” and thus the R.I.P Squad of characters had been created! This was the page that birthed them into existence:
I’ve made lots of readjustments to their character designs since then (I’ll show a few examples from 2023 now. Although I’d argue even these ones are outdated by this point, since my artstyle has changed so much):
The main takeaway is that Elaine (the one with poofy hair) and Daniel (the skeleton patterns) were always meant to be extremely closely linked in the narrative! I drew the two of them together/side-by-side many times. Below I provide some of the earliest examples :)
The premise of the R.I.P Squad is that each of the characters are trapped in this transformation curse. Elaine becomes a ghost and Daniel becomes a skeleton. Elaine goes by she/her pronouns and Daniel uses they/them btw. The curse manifests whenever they are confronted by a situation triggering their worst insecurities/forcing them to recognize suppressed internal issues. So in the story there’s a heavy emphasis on symbolism and the importance of having support groups.
I don’t have any current plans for their storylines, but I wanted to re-draw some old artwork of them together for the sake of the season! October only comes once a year after all :)
Psst even more secret extra info here: I have public Spotify playlists for both Elaine and Daniel as well! Incase you want to get a better grasp on what their music tastes are or how their personalities come across
Dropping obscure O.C lore before the year ends!?? More likely than you’d expect!! I didn’t expect making this post either lol. I was transferring my digital data off my device to clear up storage, and placing important files onto a USB for safe keeping. To my surprise tho…the USB contained this comic concept from October 25, 2020. Same year I created these characters actually! In order of introduction: Zander, Kassie, and Elaine. This was created before I had any social media platform, so I figured I might as well resurrect it to share with you all (especially for archival purposes)
The designs aren’t well-defined in the rough/sketchy artwork, so I’ll also share photos of the 2020 designs with more visible detail:
The original premise (which has been altered since then) was that they are a group of monster-themed teens trapped between the afterlife and mortal plane. Hence why this interpretation of their storyline begins with Zander waking up in the cemetery, and Elaine is intended to be a floaty ghostly figure. I decided to change this years later, so that the implication of them being dead is less prevalent. The initial narrative was a bit too grim for my liking. I’d rather them be average humans stuck with transformation curses instead, so it leans more into magical fantasy.
Even if this digital comic is outdated, I really enjoyed getting to read it again! Almost completely forgot it existed lmao. I think I’ve always had a strong focus on character dynamics and dialogue exchanges. Having them all meet at the cemetery was a interesting way to go about character introductions. The visual gag with Elaine being mistaken for someone else (due to popping up behind a tombstone that’s not her own) is pretty clever. Although if I was rewriting it, I’d change the tombstone to display a name that sounds less similar to Kassie. Plus I like how Zander appears bald in this comic (because I was too lazy to include his hair) which unintentionally implies the hair shown in his concept art is actually just a wig lmao. I mean…yeah that does make sense for a rotting corpse <<
So I don’t know if I’ve openly stated this directly here or not yet—but I’ve been trying to grind this entire week for college transfer prep. Essentially this means my community college expects me to apply to a four year institution in order to continue my education plan. I’m not anywhere near graduation (that’s next year), but typically four year colleges need to be sent your art portfolio and application MONTHS in advance. So they can discern if they want to let you in or not. I’m about to start my fall classes which means I won’t have a lot of free time to work on my art portfolio or submit my transfer. Which is why I’ve been working so hard on practicing realism, environments, and self-portraits lately.
Explanation aside, I’ve got my work cut out for me! I think I’ve finished the environmental requirement. That leaves me with the self-portrait requirement and “passion page” where I get an hour time limit to showcase my strengths. So that’s what these are for!! Drew three of my original characters that I felt confident doing from memory. For the first try, I wanted to push various expressions and differences in character facial structure. And the second attempt (another one hour limit) I wanted to see how the presentation would change if I put more emphasis on a single colored art and a few doodles instead of ALL doodles. I think if I have to select one of these for portfolio, I’m going with the first attempt/all doodle page. I think it’s easier to tell what I was going for there <<
