This just in: everything is terrible in 2020. The telescope at Arecibo Observatory, one of the most powerful ground-based radio telescopes in the world, is set to be decommissioned and dismantled according to the National Science Foundation (NSF). For 57 years, scientists have used Arecibo to detect pulsars, participate in the SETI project, narrow down data about Mercury’s rotational period and so much more. Arecibo means a lot to the world of astronomy, and I’m sad I never had the chance to see it in person.
