#petersallis, who through Wallace & Gromit represented one of the fondest aspects of my childhood, has sadly passed away at the age of 96. Being a huge W&G fan growing up, this makes me particularly sad. The endless hours of me and my family watching those shorts were not only fun, but helped me to appreciate a different style of humour and filmmaking in general. Firstly for the former, the more reserved and subtle humour of the shorts was quite refreshing and unique, especially with all the various antics that happened through the course of them. Meanwhile for the latter, the shorts took quite wild scenarios (like a space voyage, evil penguins and metallic dogs) and did it on a smaller scale, which not only made them feel more epic but also with weird twists and turns and a darker edge, making them more memorable. Through it all, we had Sallis' Wallace, who not only demonstrated a wonderful sense of comic timing but was very likable too, something Sallis would do in other roles, most notably in the long running sitcom Last Of The Summer Wine. But for me (and hopefully many others of my generation) it is his role in those shorts that we all remember him for, ensuring that he'll never be forgotten. Especially in my case, whether it be watching those shorts on DVD over a decade ago, seeing the film on opening day (my first exposure to him) and being at my aunties, watching A Matter Of Loaf & Death on Christmas Day. I remember stating that they were better than ever, proving that in his old age, Sallis was still far more talented than most on TV these days. He was a national treasure, and will be sorely missed. #rippetersallis
