RIP Zombie Boy // Rick Genest As a fan of @ladygaga, Rick was my first introduction to something fashionably dangerous a straight man could pull off. Throughout the early times™️ of sorting out my gender / sexuality (or lack of sorting out) I felt safe in his rebellious art of covering up. It’s only recently that I’ve realized that he didn’t cover up, but revealed what was underneath. And in true Born This Way fashion, you can declare your birth at any moment - a new you can be reborn tomorrow. His controversial appearance was not overshadowed by is kind demeanor, his soft spoken words and his drive to entertain all of those who dared to watch. #riprickgenest As we continued to tell the story of The First Fully Tattooed Supermodel, Rick Genest aka Zombie Boy, the visual artist gave me a heartfelt, intimate recollection of his past during our interview. Rick Genest was born in LaSalle, Quebec and was known as Zombie Boy for years before he transformed his appearance through piercings and tattoos. The Canadian artist, actor and fashion model was diagnosed with a nearly inoperable brain tumor at the age of 15. He was on a waiting list for six months, where he “contemplated his life and possible death.” The tumor was located in the lower part of his brain. If the surgery went wrong he could live the rest of his life as a vegetable. The surgery was successful, with minimal complications. For our shoot with West East Magazine, Zombie Boy request to be photographed at the local church because he had cheated death. The priests came out to ask what we were going. When I explained to them his story, the priests allowed us to shoot this image at the L’Oratoire Saint-Joseph du Mont-Royal Church. We assured them that we would be respectful to the church while on sacred grounds. Thinking about Rick Genest these days... RIP, Zombie boy, you were so talented, exiled, opened for everything. Could you imagine he was so lonely? I mean why can't we spend more time with our beloved ones and friends? We can't we just give a bit more attention to a person, who really needs that?
