Ryuichi Sakamoto: Playing The Piano for the isolated (2020)
The loss of Ryuichi Sakamoto is a heavy one, but I believe it's important to remember that he was creating and expressing himself up until the very end. He lived for his art, and his creations will live forever.
Sakamoto was a personal hero to me. I don't look up to many people. But he was the real deal. I met him in New York City when I was in high school, and it was one of the most important conversations about music I ever had in my life. I was starting to fall in love with electronic music and the work he was doing with YMO was incredible. I was geeking on on tech talk, and he was with me, and then he stopped and said something like: "The expression has to come from within you, or you're just making noise. Noise is fun. But is that what you want to make?". Hey, it was 1986. That was heavy back then. I would see him again a few more times in my life. Once on the street (also in NYC) where we noticed we were wearing the same scarf, again in a record store I worked in, and then, a few years later, in the offices of a record company I worked for.
