Your eyes slowly open as you hear shuffling around you. Reaching out to the space beside you, you realize quickly that the spot is empty.
"Riuki...?" You call out.
No response.
Your surroundings were dark. The blaring TV is the only thing illuminating Riuki's room. Looking towards the door, you realize it's slightly ajar. He must've gone out for some air. Worry builds up in your chest as you reach for your phone under your pillow.
You hopped off his bed, turning on your phone's flashlight to guide your way as you exit his room. If you learn anything by now, Riuki usually goes to the basketball court on nights where his insomnia loves to haunt him.
As you stepped onto the final staircase, you noticed Riuki stomping on something as his head snapped up to face you. "Sorry... Did I wake you?" It was the first thing to come out of his mouth. His voice was deeper than usual.
You shake your head, "No... It's alright." You hum, approaching him on the bench. Riuki didn't get to hide the evidence as your phone flashlight catches the remnants of a cigarette near his feet. You frown slightly.
Looking back at him, Riuki's head is already turned away from you. You sigh, "Riuki... is everything okay?" Worry laces your tone, and it's written all over your face. Riuki laughs awkwardly, "It's fine... 'm sorry." he hung his head low, hand on the back of his neck in guilt.
You cup his face in your hands. Gently lifting his gaze up to meet yours. Riuki spent a few seconds just looking at you. His eye searched for... something. You don't know what.
After a moment, he leans into your hold. "I had a nightmare. A really bad one. I woke up, and I just... needed a quick de-stresser. I didn't want to wake you up.. and my instinct was already reaching for the cig and lighter. Next thing I know...... Fuck. I'm sorry." He spilled his heart out.
You listened. And when Riuki falls silent, you slowly pull him in for a hug. He hesitated for just a second before his hands held you tight and his head was buried in the side of your neck.
"Riuki... Please.. please don't be afraid to reach out to me. I'm your partner... I want to be there for you." You close your eyes. "I'll wait for you. We have until the end of time here.”
You feel Riuki let out a shaky sigh. He lifted his head up slightly. "I... miss my sisters." He confessed. You nod as you lean back and hold his face up again. "How about... we go back to your room? You can tell me what you remember about them. I'm sure they love you just as much as you love them."
A smile cracks through his sad expression. "I can try. I'd love that..." He holds your hand that is holding his face and intertwines them together. "Thank you... I'll try harder not to shut myself in." He jokes.
You smile, "If you do, I'll do whatever it takes to find the key.”
