so y'all remember my samuel post? yeah apparently i made an utterly outrageous oversight:

okay i am a bit lost here. do any native speaker have any pointers as to what on earth they're saying here? "one less hand for no more cheating" "and no more knees to come back with" that part i'm fine with, but the rest of it is ??? what does faces mean here. and what's blowing anyone got to do with anything

keeping the one picture we have rn of jules in partie 2 in a locket and looking at it longingly like im in the trenches because i am. i am very much in the trenches.

if Jules' outfit on the French edition cover is canon then he wore the tie to Marseille. Which means that Adam having that tie in the second book is either:

Jules mailed it to him when he could finally stand to part with it. Freak behavior. Just throw it out man

OR

Adam bought a copy the exact same tie. FREAK behavior. Genuinely incomprehensible levels of pining

right so i keep talking about how Eufrasio was inspired by Bugsy Siegel. evidence:

Bugsy was described as being "charismatic", as Eufrasio was described as having "natural charisma"

Bugsy "became one of the first front-page celebrity gangsters," as Wikipedia puts it, just like how Eufrasio "enjoyed making headlines"

Eufrasio's personality being described as being that of a movie star; Bugsy lived in California for a while and was ridiculously popular with the movie people – though he never acted, despite auditioning

serial womanizer, extremely charming

despite this, deeply unlovable by anyone who doesn't want to fuck him. a nightmare to work with

screws the Family over financially because he does whatever he wants without a thought for consequence

shot in the head by/on orders of a close friend

had A Vision of a lucrative future business that he ultimately did not live to see (in Bugsy's case, the Vegas Strip)

and, take this with enough salt to make a jar of kosher pickles, but

third wheeling in a crime trio: this is mostly conjecture, but Meyer Lansky and Lucky Luciano grew up together and. well.

so anyways this guy is Bugsy Siegel

The business belonged to the Five Families of New York, before their contact fucked up their accounts, and consequently, their money.*

Bugsy Siegel, a famed American mobster and pin in the Jewish mob who, along with Meyer Lansky, founded the Bugs and Meyer Mob and later Murder, Inc. (yes that is a real thing). also, importantly for us, one of the founders of the Vegas Strip. he was an associate of Lucky Luciano, who funded Siegel's development of the Flamingo hotel. the project ran way over budget and over deadline, and when it finally started turning a profit Siegel refused to pay Luciano back. he didn't live too long after that.

you'll notice that he wears a checkered jacket in both the cameo and this photo. this houndstooth check was (and honestly still remains) his most iconic look, though the pattern is largely impossible to replicate in anaïs' style, so opting for a simpler windowpane check which evokes the pattern is an excellent alternative. his tie, however, is identical.

his death pose is replicated unmistakably as well, from the head lolled to the right shoulder, to the specific bloodstain pattern, to even the cop taking the photo being a nod to the one who would've stood there to take that real photograph we're looking at right now. his hair is sticking out in the same way as well.

i must say it is absolutely delightful to see a cameo of a real-life mobster in this book. i mean, eufrasio was already inspired by him, but having the man himself show up is a whole different conversation! i love how smoothly anaïs integrated him into the story. makes me wanna go back through the first book and see if i missed any cameos...
