Everything changes, everything stays the same. For how long, though?
Some new teasings for Rivages Lointains - Adam, releasing in exactly two months. I reread the PDF to approve everything, last finishing line, that's it: his story is gonna exist. I am so, so excited. More of Madeline to celebrate!

i'm-a-capo party. this narration makes me want to bawl my eyes out

ARTIST'S NOTES:
tiramisu color palette with this text and caption came to me in a vision
the composition of this was largely based on various Vogue covers that we studied
I would not have been able to draw this if not for the dozens of line of action studies Mina had done before. while this piece is mostly my work, she is to thank for the pose
in the comic, Eufrasio is almost always wearing a t-shirt under his dress shirt. this is because t-shirts (along with tank tops) were the male equivalent of bras, which is to say that they were underwear and therefore kind of mandatory for proper dress. so i decided not to draw him with one because it's a tits out kind of summer and he is uh, how you say, une salope. excuse my french
i wear a lot of split suits (partly to look like him i won't lie) so i had some personal experience with the color coordination that i could draw from for this design
the bolder external outline was inspired by RenĂŠ Gruau (one of the artists @lescarnetsdehaku lists as being among her inspirations), although i chose to make it less solid than he tended to, to better fit with the style of this piece
the shirt being the same color as the background, and not having the same extra-thick outline, is inspired by AnaĂŻs' use of silhouettes and suggested shapes, as well as some similarly outlined shapes which have the same color as background in @redglovedistrict's art. it did not turn out as noticeable as i had wanted though. perhaps next time I won't shade the bit that's background color?
normally i would go for a more natural blush effect, but in keeping with the cake theme i figured i'd make it look a bit more like strawberry drizzle. in that vein, the chest hair sorta looks like a dusting of coca powder, which was initially unintentional but i leaned into it
shout-out to @bambasbatenthusiat for sending me every single tiramisu meme they come across. it has really made a difference in convincing me to draw this
sketch and color sketch:
you might notice that the hair and collar are different between the sketch and the finished piece. what happened was, i knew i had fucked up his hair, so i went through the book to see what i needed to fix. that was easy. while doing this though i noticed that he wears spearpoint collars and not the "normal" ones that everyone else was wearing (+that we still wear today) so i changed it in the line art.
you might also notice that the sketch says 1944 while the piece says 1943. i had misremembered the exposition as him having joined the family two years before when jules was narrating it in 1946, but, once again when i was looking for references, i found out that they had been working together for two years, and eufrasio had been with the family even before that. but he was still a soldier, so i assume it couldn't have been that long ago that he was made, so i knocked it back a year
[edit: you might also notice that the text is different. i did not even notice this until half an hour after i posted this. there was not particular reason for the change i just misremembered what i meant to type. but it gives it a nice effect of sandwiching the image that "beating" would be too short to do so it worked out]
palette:
color theory is crazy i can just make his skin orange and you hardly even notice. the shadows are some dull shade of mauve and the blush is a very light pink, both on multiply
Hi everyone, just letting you know that I am sorry there are no many drawings lately, depression has been hitting especially hard and I have no energy left. I have a lot of work to finish, and as much as I feel very unprofessionnal confessing this here, staying happy and smiling has been a challenge these past weeks. This is all the consequences of a burnout I decided to ignore.
Thank you for your patience, and sorry if there are unanswered posts, DMs or asks. I'll try and come back soon.

honestly i love how technically true but utterly misleading a lot of the promotional material for Smoke/Rivages is. like I am sure we are all familiar with the english edition blurb:
"protect his love" being presented as the goal sets you up to root for him and Adam staying together. it puts you into Jules' mindset so that you are less likely to see too clearly too early on that this is never going to work. also the funniest thing is that he does end up "protecting his love and proving his loyalty", as they put it, it's just. it's bad. it's bad that he did that. we were all hoping he wouldn't do that.
and then we have this banger from the publisher Dargaud's pride month post:
"In the Chicago of the 30s, Jules, a young Italian immigrant, climbs the ranks of the local mafia, all while living out a secret and dangerous love story with a powerful mob boss."
"love story" is craaaazy. but i've made that post, that's not what i'm here to talk about. I'm here because this framing specifically makes it sound like your good ol' mafia romance. "secret and dangerous" oh so like, bad boy forbidden romance type story? no he threatens to shoot him if anyone finds out. like yeah i guess that does make it secret and dangerous but you KNOW that's not the impression you're giving. which of course is an excellent marketing tactic because it draws you in expecting one type of story, which the narrative itself wants you to mistake it for, and that ensures the maximal effectiveness of the twist.
and then there's the specific way they frame Eufrasio like here is the official blurb on Dargaud's website:
"crosses paths with Eufrasio, an impulsive mafioso who pulls him into a game that has become uncontrollable and dangerous, especially as the FBI begins taking a close interest in their affairs..."
look he was neck deep in the game long before Eufrasio. by the time Eufrasio showed up he was actively digging himself further into the game. the way this is framed naturally makes Eufrasio look like a bad influence and associates the situation spiralling out of control and the Feds closing in with Eufrasio when like. that's Adam's fault. but like i can't even call this innaccurate because even within the book itself, Jules paints Eufrasio as a bad influence on him, it's just a lot more subtle and therefore harder to argue against
anyways the english version really lays it on thick.
they get three words to describe him and they use violent as one of them. Jules already being established as being with Adam earlier in the blurb, the descriptor of "handsome" also implies an association with treachery and temptation. "insists that Adam is holding Jules back" makes him sound a lot pushier than he is. I mean, does he ever even do it outright? mostly we see Adam insisting that Eufrasio is a problem. so this primes you to expect a love corner situation where one of the love interests is trying to distance Jules from the other, but it implies this of the wrong person. once again, nothing they say here is technically untrue, it's just that they are extremely selective about what they tell you, so that you don't suspect a thing of Adam until it's too late.
i talked to AnaĂŻs about this and she said that this was entirely the marketing departments' doing and she had basically no input, which i suppose makes sense; i would have a hard time willfully misrepresenting my story like this ahaha. but it does work incredibly well, and gives you a sense of all the themes without giving away the plot. very impressive stuff but also utterly hilarious to look back on after you've read the story
something i find really interesting is that at the start of the story, Adam is so powerful that he is almost a symbolic figure, the face of the Chicago underworld. all the things that he is â mysterious, seductive, ruthless, powerful â are a reflection of the world which he is supposed to represent. his favoritism of Jules feels so valuable because it's not just one person that favors him, it is a whole way of life, a whole industry, a whole social class. having Adam's power behind him means Jules has a whole world behind him.
then in New York when Adam becomes divorced from that world, his source of power, he is reduced to nothing more than a man. now, his favor is not enough, is not going to get Jules anywhere; Adam has lost his value as the symbol of the powerful underground and thus it becomes clear that he offers very little value on a personal level. he loses his mythology, his veneer, and in the end is just a petty, insecure, "pathetic little man whose glory days are over".
it's a story about disillusionment, about realising the person you fell in love with was only ever just a person, not what you thought they represented.
If there is anything that can rival this comic in my affections right now, it would be perfumery. So I thought Wow, wouldn't it be a GREAT idea to combine the two?
[montage of raiding the spice cabinet, speading hours on Fragrantica, screaming into a pillow because I don't have any real materials to work with]
Since you can't smell a post (where's THAT update, tumblr?) I made moodboards to evoke the notes! I have never made moodboards before in my life. I also just had to match them to the character colors which. well it was sure A Process!
But after a week of toil, my labour has finally borne fruit. Without further ado, allow me to introduce
the ÂŤ Distant Shores Âť collection!
[warning: images of syringe, substances, guns]
Starting with our protagonist and definitely very reliable narrator:
A strong opening; a firm first impression that fades into something distinctive, yet unintrusive. Something you remember without noticing. It's all too easy to relax around this scent, soft and sweet and down-to-earth as it may appear, but what seems like innocence is a lure. Let yourself be entranced, and you might just pay with your life.
Moonshine
ÂŤ Just remember: it's us or them. Âť
Head: bergamot, brandy, apple
Heart: tobacco, geranium, vetiver
Base: leather, ozone, iso e super, metallic notes
At once sharp and heady, at once warm and frigid. The smell of a host at a drunken party, standing above the masses and counting his earnings. Perhaps you make it past the acidic beginnings, perhaps you are rewarded in passionate embrace. It never lasts, though, and soon you are left holding nothing but the cold night air.
Loud and foul-mouthed, the charisma of this scent comes precisely from being unconcerned with disapproval. Sit a little with this rather confronting personality, and you discover a surprisingly gentle warmth underneath. It was the closest thing you'd had to a home. Now you stand, feet in the sand, as acrid regret drifts through the air.
Oh my god. Omg omgomg. I need time to process this incredible post as I LOVE perfumery, but it would be criminal not to rb it instantly. Woa. Woawoawoaw.
hiii i hope you're doing well, i just wanted to drop in and ask if you know why all your comments have all disappeared? i wanted to link ur character colors comment on that colors of disillusionment post i made on a new post i was drafting but i noticed it was gone n this has happened with all the other comments u have left too. i hope im not overstepping ^-^' anyways hope your day is nice!!
Hi!! Thank you for inquiring that's very sweet!
I think I got a glitch with my account?? I had to change my password, but the app just wouldn't load and said something unexpected happened. I couldn't even log off from my account in the app, I had to delete it from my phone and change my password to force the access.
I hope everything is back now?? I think I saw some older comment while checking the sgiye tag!

If Adam, Jules and Eufrasio were cups, what types do you think each of them would be?
I know this is an odd question but like I have reasons youâll see⌠eventuallyâŚ
HI!!
First off: you have NO IDEA how much this specific question is actually up to my alley.
OKAY, HERE ARE MY CUPS HEADCANONS!!
JULES - 1974 ARCOPAL
Jules would be an Arcopal cup, for sure, it is sturdy, unbreakable (or you'd really have to try), it has this really pearly finish that make it seem transparent but actually isn't.
This is from the Lotus collection, I feel like groovy vibe suit him well. Close tie with the Mobil collection.
ADAM - RUSKA ARABIA 1960
Ruska ("brown" in finnish) is a collection from Arabia, a finnish dinnerware and one of my favorite designer house. It is matte, a high handle, delicate natural pattern, everything I love with scandinavian design. I basically think Adam could be anything from their 1960-70s drinking glass collection.
EUFRASIO - CLASSIC MIDCENTURY ENAMEL CUP
The perfect match. Classic yet unbeatable. Drink on the spot, keep it for a bit. Neat when immaculate, gains character when bruised. Immediate rizz. Will never go out of fashion.
tiramisu, n. from Italian tirami su, âcheer me upâ, lit. âpick me upâ
Eufrasio, of Greek origin, possibly derived from Îľá˝ĎĎÎąÎŻÎ˝Ď (euphraino) meaning âto gladdenâ, âto delightâ.
Tiramisu is said to have aphrodisiac effects and to have been invented in a 19th-century Treviso brothel to âsolve the problems [husbands] may have had with their conjugal duties on their return to their wivesâ. ( Accademia del TiramisĂš )
