Day 18/365
River Cat
Pen & Ink
- Alexa Ellstrom
Love it when he sleeps with his face smooshed into the pillow.
Image ID: my cat (named River), a brown tabby with a white muzzle, chest, and paws, sleeping face down on a yellow fleece pillow patterned with horses (because River is a cowboy).
My cat: MAYeayhh
Me: You're always saying that

Not sure if there is something like this that exists and is still operational, but I think there should be a hotline/hotlines for nightmares/sleep paralysis/other sleep-related issues that can cause intense feelings of fear, hurt, and/or anger, as well as paranoia, hallucinations, delusions, etc. upon waking up.
My dreams (read: nightmares) are so vivid I frequently wake up trembling, sweating profusely, worrying that dream events were real, and feeling like I didn't actually sleep at all. The fear and exhaustion are both debilitating and can follow me around throughout the day, or sometimes longer. But who do you contact when you're having a panic attack first thing in the morning over something that may have been extremely graphic, confusing, and surreal...?
I'm grateful I at least have my cat. He usually sleeps next to me at night, and if the smell of my fear wakes him up, he'll lay on my hand and start purring really hard to get me to wake up too. Or if I wake up on my own and start squirming around he'll get up as well and readjust himself so he can squish my hand underneath him and purr to help calm me down.
Why does he always want my 'nanners? 😢
