Cleo knew she had to go all out for River’s birthday this year. Not only was it the first birthday they would spend together as a couple - her first birthday as his girlfriend - but River had gone more than all out for her birthday back in February. He’d given her the most thoughtful gifts - the bee necklace, the canvas of them in New York, and the CD he recorded for her - and, on top of all of that, he’d thrown her an amazing surprise party. It was perfect. And she wanted this to be perfect for him too. Jack had done her the favor of keeping Riv busy during the day so she could have time to set everything up for when he arrived. Balloons, decor, dinner... She’d even made sure Haley would be out for the night (for her own sake, really, because it was his birthday after all). And after rushing back home to take a shower and get ready, she made it back to the apartment just in time for Jack to text her that he was on his way up. She quickly dimmed the lights, lit the last few candles up, and sat down on the dinner table with his cake right in front of her spelling out “Happy 23rd birthday, Riv!” in blue frosting. 

“Happy birthday to you...” she started singing the moment he walked in. She very carefully picked up his cake and met him at the entrance. “Make a wish.” she whispered, glancing up at him with a smile.

He hadn’t asked her to pick him up from the airport. The words “Cleo, could you please?” or anything remotely similar to that had simply not come out of his mouth, but still, Cleo insisted she wanted to be there when he arrived. He would be flying back from Japan, probably jet lagged and she wasn’t about to let him get into an Uber when she had both the time and a car to go pick him up. They hadn’t seen each other in a while and Cleo was most excited to hear all about his trip (and... maybe see what he’d brought back, because he may have mentioned souvenirs). Having arrived just in time for his arrival, she now stood at the waiting area at the airport holding a nice, big, handmade poster that said “WELCOME BACK, RIVER!” in bright blue letters.

River Joseph McGrath is twenty-one years old and a junior at Greensville Community College.

River McGrath hadn’t always been the most open-minded guy when it came to his high school years. Since he was little, he cared so much about being the most popular kid and avoided anything and anyone that would stunt him from getting there. He changed personalities like he changed clothes, just wanting to fit in with the group that everyone admired. He spent so long chasing something as unimportant as popularity that he didn’t know who he was anymore. Sure, he had what he had always wanted. He was a team captain of the basketball team, had plenty of friends, dated plenty of girls but he felt empty every time he came home from practice. He would find enjoyment in things like music and filmography, yet he kept it such a secret out of fear his friends would find it “uncool.” It wasn’t until he graduated that he realised how much of a mistake he had made of his school career. His toxic friends had moved away, leaving him in Greensville all by himself with no motivation or clue of what he wanted to do with his life. He had spent so much time partying and bunking off classes that his grades suffered. He was surprised he even graduated on time, always passing by the skin of his teeth. Sure, he could’ve tried getting a scholarship elsewhere for his basketball abilities but he didn’t even feel motivated to play anymore - at least not at college level. He spent an entire summer trying to find who he was and what he enjoyed, spending a lot of time by himself to enjoy what he always loved: film and music. He enrolled to the local community college shortly after, enrolling under a media production diploma that would allow him to study multiple areas in a field he enjoyed. Now a junior, River is starting to slowly find his feet. He was enjoying college, he was making friends that were good for him - he felt confident enough to put himself out there into the world without a care of what people thought about him. In fact, he felt embarrassed about how he used to be in high school and spends a majority of his time trying to undo all his wrongs. Did he still have a long way to go? Absolutely. But it was at least a start.
