I always hc that when Hedwig can’t sing it and Yitzhak sings it instead that he is singing his frustrations about Hedwigs treatment of him, and also his anger in knowing that Hedwig is that way because of Tommy. Him singing that song is like a little act of rebelion and freedom
especially since it was written by Tommy/Hedwig
[ I’ve had that thought for a long time too. When I first was watching Hedwig, I read it more as Yitzhak being pissed at Tommy for what he did to Hedwig. He knows better than anyone the effect Tommy’s leaving and stealing Hedwig’s songs has had on her. It was actually with Anthony Rapp’s Hedwig that I finally realized he was singing it to Hedwig as much (or on that particular vid, more in my opinion) as for Hedwig. ]
