Lily Evans who loves her sister more than anything. Petunia is her best friend, her confidant, her everything. They go everywhere together and do everything together. They are inseparable.
Lily who sings wherever she goes, loves wildflowers, and always has dirt under her nails. In the summer, she wears daisy chains in her dark, red hair. She loves pink dresses and pink shoes, even though people tell her the color clashes with her hair. Lily doesn’t care! Pink makes her happy, so pink she shall wear.
Lily who can do things she doesn’t understand. Flowers open and close at her bidding, branches sway when there is no wind, and even the air itself rises up to make her every step lighter.
Lily who doesn’t understand why Tuney can’t do what she can. For the first time, there is a rift between the two sisters, and it feels to Lily as though part of her heart is being torn away from her body.
Lily who turns her back on a strange boy who says strange words. He calls her rude names and insults Tuney. Of course they won’t have anything to do with him!
Lily who, as the rift between Petunia and herself grows deeper, begins thinking more about what that Severus boy said. Could she be something special? Could there be a reason behind the strange things she can do?
Lily who becomes best friends with Severus. He understands what she can do and assures her that it’s completely normal for “people like us.” There’s a special school they can go to and Lily will never have to feel like she’s strange ever again. The only sad part is that Tuney can’t come, too.
Lily who can’t help the tears that slip down her cheeks as the train pulls away from platform 9 3/4. Tuney called her a freak. A freak. She tries to push her sadness away and put on a brave face for the very-excited Severus.
Lily who watches helplessly as her best friend gets involved with friends who are creepy and cruel. How can she be friends with him when he’s friends with them? But he’s all she has, and so she tries.
Lily who diligently writes letters to her sister and parents every week. Her parents write back with equal enthusiasm, but from Tuney there is never any reply.
Lily who gets increasingly indignant when Severus treats her like she’s beneath him, or lesser than him, or any other such nonsense. It makes her so angry! As if she’s not allowed to speak for herself... How can she continue to tolerate this? He’s still her best friend, but clearly the line needs to be drawn somewhere.
Lily who feels so alone. Tuney never writes back. Severus is changing. Her parents are proud of her, but that just isn’t enough for her lonely soul. Sure, she has friends; how could she not after sleeping in the dormitory with several other girls for the past few years? But Lily doesn’t make close friends easily. Right now, she just wants to go back to when life was simpler.
Lily who is irritated by the unwanted attention of James Potter. He likes to tease her and jokingly ask her to go out with him. The nerve! He’s so mean to poor Sev. No way she’d ever go out with him. She’d rather date the giant squid...
Lily whose life changes forever in her 5th year. Sev has gone too far this time. Things have been building up for years, but mudblood put her over the edge. He can’t be her best friend anymore. Is he even her friend? Surely true friends don’t treat each other like dirt... It seems that the line has been drawn now. And it’s been drawn in blood and tears.
Lily who is angry with Potter and his stupid, arrogant friends. She blames him for the rift between herself and Severus. Actually, her life seems to be made up of rifts: Sev caused a rift between Lily and Petunia, James caused a rift between Lily and Severus. Is that all that’s in store for her?
Lily who, with the stress of her difficult friendship with Severus gone, begins to notice things about “that horrible Potter.” For instance, he doesn’t actually tease anyone other than Severus and the members of his Death Eater club (and as nasty as they are to James and his friends, she can’t exactly blame him). Also, there’s the way he gathers outcasts to himself and befriends them: poor Lupin is always so sickly; Peter is a bit overweight and unpopular in general, but that doesn’t deter James. Can James Potter actually be a decent guy?
Lily who gradually finds herself falling in love with the tall, handsome, kind quidditch player. He’s still a bit of a showoff, but everyone has their quirks. Can this happiness really be for her? After losing first Tuney and then Sev, this really seems too good to last.
Lily who is finally asked out by James (for real) in their 7th year. Seventeen year old Lily feels like she’s floating on clouds! For years, her heart has ached for such a close relationship. Finally, she has someone who can share her joys and sorrows, her happiness and pain. Lily loves crazy-haired James Potter and she’s never been happier in all her life.
Lily who has never heard more beautiful words than James Potter’s “will you marry me?” Surely life is glorious and wonderful! They try to have a small wedding, but they have too many friends from their time at Hogwards for that to work out. This is the beginning of forever, and Lily is content. But there are whispers in the wind.
Lily Potter who, at 19, is one of the youngest members of the Order of the Phoenix. Voldemort is creeping through the night, killing whoever dares to stand in his path. No one is safe. Peace is a distant memory, lurking far back in a hazy past. Death Eaters stir terror in the hearts of even the bravest witches and wizards. But deep inside a mother’s womb, protected against all evil, a baby grows; and this baby will change the world.
Lily who feels a hundred years old. Has any 20-year-old ever felt this way? Well, maybe the young man beside her. Lily calms her heart as she stares into the bright eyes of her newborn son; they are a green identical to her own. “But he has your hair,” she murmurs to her husband. If a passerby were to look through the window that night, they would see a child-husband and child-wife sitting close together, cradling a tiny baby between them. The nights are dark and the days are evil. How can innocence survive?
Lily who stands beside her husband as they choose a secret-keeper. No one will ever suspect little Peter Pettigrew. They are safe now. She holds baby Harry close to her heart, whispering words of love into his tiny ears.
Lily who watches as James grows restless from inactivity. He itches to be doing something for the Order. Lily can’t help but be grateful that she, James, and their little Harry are forced to stay together, out of harm’s way. Gone are the days when Lily longed for adventure. Now she just wants her husband and baby to be safe. She wants life to be normal. She wants time to enjoy being a wife and mother. She is tired of living in fear.
Lily who is 21 and “LILY, TAKE HARRY AND RUN!” and “I’LL HOLD HIM OFF.” And the world ends because James Potter is dead. She sees the love written on his face one last time and knows that she’ll see him soon. The door lies splintered on the floor and a face too cruel to words leers at the body of Lily’s dearest love. Her very breaths are numbered. But Harry is alive. Oh, Harry, why did I bring you into this world? I’m so, so, so sorry. Be brave, my baby. Young Lily sweeps year-old Harry into the crib and stands in front of it, arms outstretched. In her last moment, she doesn’t panic. She has no regrets. Harry wasn’t an accident, and she can’t bring herself to truly regret the time spent with him this past year. Her face is fearless as Voldemort appears in the nursery doorway. The end is coming, but she has to try: “PLEASE NOT HARRY...KILL ME INSTEAD.” Suddenly, the world is made of green light; she gazes at her child’s face one last time. But there is another face growing clearer and clearer. The smiling face of James Potter is where little Harry’s was a moment before. A hand reaches out to her. Lily takes it...
“The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.”
