Hamersley Street by Studio53:
“The Hamersley Road Residence is the conversion of an early 1900’s Australian employees cottage to a practical, modern family residence. The external timberwork, moulded plaster, handmade tiles and flannel flower glass of the existing residence give the residence a distinct arts and crafts aesthetic. The house had been untouched for numerous years. As the new owners, and as an Architect and Interior Style staff, we wished to supply a practical property for our household with versatility for now and into the long term. We also wished to respect and enhance the present craftsmanship.
As we had been designing a home for our family, we wanted to optimise the space of the comparatively little internet site location. We were in a position to do this via the use of pure forms this kind of as the ‘courtyard’ and the ‘box’.
To the rear of the current home we constructed a ground floor extension that envelopes a landscaped courtyard. Building to two boundaries and focusing the new ground floor rooms into the courtyard assisted in the creation and then blurring of the boundaries among indoor and outside. The intent was to supply multiple spaces of differing character, to be employed at diverse instances of the day and yr, some inside and some outside.
The upper level addition is delineated from the existing residence by taking the type of a pure yellow ‘box’ gently placed on top of the ground floor behind the gable of the present house. The Box is then more wrapped in a perforated screen to shade and defend it from the sun.
The conception of the ‘box’ is integral to the style of this property. Internally, the box is its personal zone bedrooms, bathroom and perform area for the youngsters. Externally the box defines the character of the extension, highlighting the alter from existing house to contemporary property in a sympathetic but contrasting manner.
The intricately patterned and visually permeable screen envelops the box on all sides. The pattern is inspired from the floral motif of the authentic carpet and fireplace tiles although given a contemporary edge. This display supplies visual richness, shade and safety to openings while giving opportunities for passive surveillance of the street. At evening, the screen is illuminated, glows and provides a moment of joy for the neighbourhood.
During the style procedure, we re-used and recycled elements of the present residence to generate a story of restoration. This included recycling bricks, light fittings, and even the outdated laundry trough, which is now a thriving herb backyard. The unique tin awning on the front of the existing house was resurrected with a coat of Dulux Weathershield in ‘Happy’ to match the ‘box’.
In spite of becoming untouched for more than 90 many years, the existing property was rescued and rejuvenated. The trustworthy values of the property have been maintained, continued and extended into the new addition, to breathe existence into the present cottage and to create a “happy” and modern loved ones residence.”
