Duran Duran & Japan ˚ ༘♡ ⋆。˚
“Across the hall from Japan, Duran Duran were recording their first album. 'I do remember Duran Duran showing up to pay their respects to the band,' remembers Nicola Tyson, friend and photographer of Japan. "I remember them piling into the studio, a bunch of awkward lookalikes - they were nobody at the time and it was a big non-event!' 'I remember them hanging around,' says Dean. 'We knew they were listening in and taking notes. We were probably a bit aloof.’
Duran, and in particular John and Nick, were huge fans of Japan. Karn: '[Previous to meeting at AIR] Rich and I got a cassette from a band who wanted us to produce their album, and it was a band called Duran Duran, who we'd never heard of. We listened to the tape..’ Karn was not taken with what he heard at the time. "So we wrote back and said, "Sorry".
We found that it sounded so similar to us that they wanted us because of who we were and not that they thought we could do anything good with it.' Barbieri: 'Duran Duran were very pleasant the few times we met them, but suffice to say we didn't really like the tape at the time and ultimately passed on it.”
John Taylor: “Nick and I first saw Japan at Barbarellas in Birmingham on their 'Obscure Alternatives' tour and were blown away. They were so fresh, while every other band in town were tripping over each other in a rush to play the same three chords, Japan were brave in many ways. When I think back to that night the image that first comes to mind first is beautiful Mick, red hair and Ibanez bass, shaved eyebrows and ballet shoes, shuffling around the floor like a docile robot, playing also with great beauty and verve, punching delicate holes in the fabric of the songs; in Mick Karn's basslines no notes were ever wasted.”
