After Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) was hospitalized for almost a month without releasing any details about his health to the public, CNN’s Scott Jennings and multiple GOP senators noted they had had long conversations with the senator, fueling criticism and conspiracy theories among some right-wing media figures. According to a July 11 statement from McConnell, he was hospitalized after a fall and was treated for pneumonia.  While Jennings repeatedly said he had a phone call with McConnell and his “voice sounded strong,” others in right-wing media claimed “Mitch McConnell is brain dead” or vaguely stated “something is not right, something is going on here.” After McConnell’s office posted a photo of the senator at the hospital, some in right-wing media still cast doubt on the photo, speculating that it may have been generated by artificial intelligence and arguing that McConnell needs to “do a video.”

McConnell was admitted to a hospital on June 14, but his office offered very few specifics at the time about his condition. [The Associated Press, 6/14/26]

Following a nearly month-long silence, the senator issued a statement saying he was “briefly unconscious” after a fall and was treated for pneumonia. McConnell said he would not yet be returning to the Senate as he recovers. His statement also contained a photo of McConnell and his wife. [The Associated Press, 7/12/26]

Newsmax Host Reminds MAGA Rep. Why Exactly Americans Aren't Feeling 'This Cuba Thing'

Newsmax host Rob Finnerty on Wednesday questioned Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.) over speculation that the Trump administration could attack Cuba after a recent Axios report about the threat of a drone strike. “And I’ll be honest ... to me, this just sounds like we’re trying to make the case to attack Cuba. I don’t buy it. It sounds like a false flag operation,” said Finnerty in his interview with the MAGA-friendly chair of the House Oversight Committee. “Would you support military action in Cuba if it came to that?” Finnerty’s “honest” on-air assessment came hours after Cuba’s former President Raúl Castro was indicted over a 1996 downing of planes operated by Miami-based exiles.

[...] Earlier in the interview, Finnerty asked Comer about “this Cuba thing,” pointing to Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s urging the Cuban people in Spanish on Wednesday to embrace a “new chapter” in their relationship with the U.S. “I get it. The ayatollah is gone. Nicolás Maduro is in jail. ... Look, I think people struggle with how this is America first when gas is $4.55 a gallon right now,” Finnerty said.

Comer told Finnerty that Cuba has always been a national security threat, and since Cubans “clearly want a regime change,” the country’s proximity to the U.S. presents a “strategic problem.” Finnerty chimed back in, “Do you really think that Cuba’s a threat?” Comer responded with a big “if.”

One Newsmax host's critical stance on the war with Iran

On the March 3 edition of Newsmax’s prime-time show Finnerty, host Rob Finnerty made some critical comments regarding President Donald Trump’s war with Iran. His remarks are surprising given Newsmax’s consistent stance of supporting Trump’s agenda and interests, and breaks with the general support for the war among other Newsmax’s prime-time hosts.  The first segment of Finnerty’s show presented a series of chyrons noting that the conflict is “not helping Trump’s popularity” and stating that there is “no real plan for ending” the war.  “Over 77 million Americans voted for Donald Trump because he was not only the America-first president, but for the first time we had a campaign where ‘no new wars’ became a central theme of an election,” the host declared, before playing clips of Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard repeating that slogan on the campaign trail in 2024. Finerty continued, “And after 14 months, that is exactly what we have — a new war.”

In contrast to much of Newsmax’s coverage-- especially from Carl Higbie and Greg Kelly-- Rob Finnerty has used his primetime show to criticize the war on Iran.

President Donald Trump’s unhinged reaction to the stabbing deaths of Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner, which the president gleefully attributed to “the anger” the legendary director “caused others” via his anti-Trump activism in a Monday morning Truth Social post, triggered some of the most unified criticism from the right of Trump’s second term.  On social media, conservative pundits and Fox News stars used words like “disgraceful,” “appalling,” “disgusting,” “unnecessary,” “inappropriate,” “gross,” “awful,” “cruel,” and “insane” to describe Trump gloating about brutal killings. CNN’s MAGA commentators, whose jobs depend on their willingness to defend the president at his most indefensible, were unwilling or unable to back Trump’s self-centered rantings about Reiner. On Fox, coverage of Trump’s comment was nearly nonexistent outside of Special Report; star host Jesse Watters gave a lengthy monologue about the killings and interviewed Reiner friend James Woods, but he aired Trump’s defense of his post without comment beyond noting, “Whoa.” 

While Trump has long demonstrated a near-pathological lack of empathy for those who don’t support him, the president’s suggestion that Reiner may have been killed alongside his wife in their home by someone he had “driven … CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump” seemed to hit a nerve even among his supporters. Perhaps this is due to the tragic and deeply human circumstances of the Reiners’ deaths — their son, who has long struggled with drug addiction, is allegedly “responsible,” and was arrested Monday.  But not everyone feels that way. A handful of prominent commentators on the right have risen in support of Trump’s Reiner remarks.  They are justifying Trump’s “mean” comments on the grounds that Reiner is “a loser” who “spent a decade slandering” the president. They are praising Trump for being “very honest” and not “a phony.” They are arguing that complaining about it is stupid because Reiner’s leftist movement purportedly “wants us all dead.” And they are lashing out at those criticizing Trump, calling them “fake grifters” who are “whining like little bitches” about the president.

Donald vowed to “immediately bring prices down, starting on day one” of his presidency, and on Truth Social, he specifically mentioned egg prices and grocery items while blaming Joe Biden. He also said, "We will make America affordable again because the prices are too high." He mentioned that that will happen "on day one." Instead, the prices for gas, groceries, cars, and eggs are skyrocketing. But Newsmax host Rob Finnerty said that Trump “can't magically lower gas prices, mortgage rates, food prices, inflation, or egg prices," and that you should "get over it," Media Matters reports. After bashing Democrats, including Nancy Pelosi, Finnerty said that Donald isn't a "magical wizard." "It's also important to point out that Donald Trump is not some magical wizard," he said. It took Joe Biden 48 months to ruin the country. Donald Trump can't just fix it in 48 days. He's not a wizard. He can't magically lower gas prices, mortgage rates, food prices, inflation, or egg prices." "And to Democrats worried about egg prices today, get over it," he added. "And why weren't you worried about the prices of everything else when your guy was in the Oval Office? Why suddenly now? And why egg prices?"

Newsmax host Rob Finnerty is out of touch by telling those complaining about the high cost eggs to “get over it.”

Rob Finnerty began his prime-time program on the right-wing news network with effusive adulation of the newly inaugurated president, saying that Trump had already delivered on a number of campaign promises with a blizzard of executive orders dealing with immigration, government diversity initiatives and other conservative priorities. "I have no idea how Donald Trump does what he does," Finnerty said. "The man who was made for this job is doing exactly what he said he would do. Yes, Donald Trump was dictator on Day One, but a dictator that the American people voted for. They all asked for this and voted for this, and according to our border czar today, Tom Homan, over 300 criminal illegal aliens were arrested on Day One. It took one day, and did you hear anything negative about it? I didn't. Did you hear about roundups? Did you hear about ICE agents going into the ghettos and banging down doors? No, because that didn't happen, and that is exactly what the American people voted for, and if you don't believe me, just ask the only guy over at CNN that should work at Newsmax. On Wednesday’s edition of Newsmax’s Finnerty, host Rob Finnerty admitted that Donald Trump was a “dictator on day one” and gave praise to it.

Trump didn’t stop acting like a dictator on day two.

Jason Miller, senior advisor to former President Donald Trump, said that if Trump wins again, “It’s ‘going to be up to the states’ whether or not they set up regimes to monitor women’s pregnancies so they can prosecute them for getting out-of-state abortions.” In other words, Trump will support Republican attorneys general and other law enforcement officials hunting down people who cross state lines to receive abortions for any reason. An interviewer with the conservative news outlet Newsmax asked Miller if this is something Trump would support, saying, “[Trump] wouldn’t support monitoring pregnancies even if a state decided to do that?” Miller replied, “Well, he’s made it very clear that he’s not gonna go and weigh in and try to push various states in how they want to go and set up their particular rules and restrictions. That’s gonna be up to the states.” The implications of this type of policy extend beyond abortion rights, as it also could affect gender-affirming care.

Appearing on the May 1st, 2024 edition of Newsmax’s Wake Up America, guest and Trump advisor Jason Miller said that states would be permitted to hunt down abortion and gender-affirming care service seekers if Trump gets elected again.
