Type Radio: Rob Meek
Tonight I listened to an interview with Rob Meek on Type Radio. He developed the FontStruct program online. FontStruct is a free font-building tool that is sponsored by FontShop. Within this program, FontStruct lets you create fonts quick and easy out of geometrical shapes, which are arranged in a grid pattern resembling tiles or bricks.
Rob Meek came up with this idea when he wanted to make a practical tool for making modular grid based fonts. He wanted to do it for many years but it never was made because he couldn’t do it all in his free time. That is when he knew he needed to find a client. He knew this would be a perfect project for FontShop. Rob Meek thought FontStruct would be interesting in America because FontShop has it’s competition here and it came into the market quite late. FontShop willing to help out with FontStruct, was a brave decision on their part because users can make copies of these fonts. It is limited though because of its matrix-based, grid based fonts and having no competition with their library.
The reaction Rob Meek got from users was great. He received e-mails from famous pixel font designers that really liked FontStruct. Meek described this program as designing fonts on a “simple square paper.” He continues on about how FontStruct is perfect for beginners because it doesn’t get into all the technical aspects that a font designer must know right away.
FontStruct has 140,000 registered users and is great because all of them have one thing in common: making fonts. It is a great community to be apart of. The age group is a wide range but Meek suspects the highest proportions are young designers around the age of 20. Meek came to Germany originally to do random text generated projects and wants to take up that again when he has time.
After listening to this interview I looked at FontStruct’s website, and browsed through what other designers have created.
