‘Bugger Off!’
Anti-Rupert Murdoch poster by Robbie Conal
Robbie Conal, known for his citywide postering campaigns featuring garish depictions of the powerful, is back — with the Supreme Court in hi
Absolute legend!
One of his more memorable pieces, from 1991, depicted former Supreme Court chief justice William Rehnquist with the phrase, "GAG ME WITH A COAT HANGER" — a reference to a gag rule, first devised during the Reagan administration, that prevented doctors from counseling patients about abortion.
Now, 30 years after reproductive rights activists fought to have that gag rule rescinded, Conal is back with another poster, "Supreme Injustices," that takes on the six justices who voted to overturn Roe. "Exactly 30 f— years ago," he tells the assembled crowd. "And here we are again."
Two of the most prominent politically minded, Los Angeles-based street artists of the past couple of decades, Robbie Conal and Shepard Fairey, are getting together to talk online next week about Conal’s new book, as part of the long-running Live Talks Los Angeles, an organization run by a friend of mine, Ted Habte-Gabr.
Best of all, the talk is free! And if you can’t listen live, it’ll become part of the deep vault of author talks Live Talks LA has hosted over the past eight or nine years.
They have some other notable talks coming in the next couple of weeks, featuring people such as Michael Lewis with Larry Wilmore, and two-time National Book Award winner Colson Whitehead on his newest, The Nickel Boys. You can also help support Ted’s organization, which lost its main source of income (ticket sales), by buying a book or chipping in a donation to help Live Talks LA survive. I know he’s faced some challenges over the past few months.
