Today is the 134th birthday of one of New York’s most iconic architectural landmark, the Brooklyn Bridge! Since its creation, the bridge has been a source of inspiration for artists, residents, and tourists alike.
The monumental landmark is captured here through a modernist lens by the urban realist painter Glenn O. Coleman. Originally from the Midwest, Coleman moved to New York with a strong interest in the modernization of the city. Coleman developed his modernist aesthetic under the tutelage of Robert Henri, the leader of the Ashcan School, and through paintings, lithographs, and drawings, he captured the people and architecture of Lower Manhattan. This painting, Bridge Tower, was completed just a few years before Coleman’s death in 1932. It captures the technological innovations that have greatly impacted the city, such as the towering skyscrapers in the background and the structures that improved and eased transportation.
