Robert Joseph Flaherty (16 February 1884 – 23 July 1951), considered the “father” of documentary films.

Nanook of the North (1922) was the first commercially successful documentary film and demonstrated that the documentary genre could be both a critical and commercial success (although Nanook is not strictly a documentary by today's standards, as it includes some "staged" or manipulated scenes).
