“I can’t read. At least, not easily.” Tommy waited for the usual reaction of horror and discomfort, but Mac didn’t say anything. He just waited for more. “I’m what’s considered functionally illiterate. I can read things, but it takes me ten times as long as everyone else.” “But why?” Mac shook his head. “That makes no sense. I know you’re a smart guy. Even I’ve seen that much, so what’s the holdup? Did something happen in school? I know your dad was military. Did you somehow miss something those years when they taught you to read? If so, I can teach you. Or someone else. We can hire a tutor. Whatever you need.”
