CHICANO ART MOVEMENT visits: Robert Palacios ‘Slice of Life’ at ChimMaya Gallery 2013
via Robert Palacios.com: Robert Palacios was born and raised in Los Angeles California. Since at a very young age he was intrested in creating art. Roberts work is marked by his vivid hues and engaging characters. He begins by digesting thoughts and memories from his childhood. Before beginning his colorful paintings he sketches out his ideas to set the mood. His characters and their surroundings are the focal point in his artwork. They are often put in humorous situations which people can usually relate to. He likes to characterize his paintings as visual narratives of daily life, but with a comical twist.

In conjunction with Robert's Slice of Life art exhibit artists Crystal Galindo's New Works and Christina Ramos', Bad Habits were exhibited in the adjacent galleries. We also attended the exhibitions during Chimmaya's Art & Jewelry Trunk show event, where artists Robert Palacios, Anna Alvarado, Christina Ramos and Lisa Rocha (Ilaments Jewelry) were in attendance. It gave me the opportunity to have an in-depth conversation with Mr. Palacios on the works in the exhibit. We were also able to chat with the always friendly Anna Alvarado who let us in on her current and future projects she is working on.
(Robert Palacios - 'Marked for Life', 2013, acrylic on panel, 6x6.5) Walking into Chimmaya we entered through the large gallery where artist Robert Palacios Slice of Life was exhibited. Mr. Palacios was in attendance greeting and talking with art goers and collectors as they viewed his current oeuvre. Viewing Robert's work I experienced the feeling of a euphoric sugar rush from his hyper-vivid color palette, attention to detail and of course his cast of whimsical characters.
Detail: (Robert Palacios - "Featherweight champion of the world", acrylic on panel 5.5x6.25) My favored pieces in the Slice of Life exhibit were, "Lacey" acrylic on panel 4x6 framed, "Marked for Life", 2013, acrylic on panel, 6x6.5, and all of the framed pencil sketches by Mr. Palacios. Which Robert Palacios told me personally he would be releasing his sketches more often to interested collectors. Robert also gave us a little scoop on his future show in Culver City, California. Where I was able to see her beautiful self portrait entitled “29: Dolor”, which was a dynamic 3.5x 5 ft., acrylic, oil on panel in person, along with her recently created Selena Complex series. We also took a gander at Christina Ramos' depictions of mischievous nuns in her, Bad Habits exhibit.
