This is a bad idea. Each time a new person comes into your home, and your sweet baby slaps at whatever is closest to her, mouthing dada, you realize how stupid this was. Sundae hadn’t ever been exposed to too many people at once like this, and she was getting frustrated at Cherry not being there.
Seeing Robert she squeals at him, making grabby hands to the door, “Hello, my Pretty Girl, and my beautiful baby,” picking her up off your hip, he wraps an arm around you to guide you outside. “He’ll be here,” he whispers to the two of you. “He called.”
“Dadadadadadadada,” Sundae repeats, and Robert rolls his eyes.
“We gotta…freaking fix that.”
“She’s confused. She’s used to seeing Cherry everyday,” Robert jumps when his daughter screams beside him, looking down at her accusatory. “See? Cherry.”
“Dadadadadadadada!”
Robert takes a deep calming breath as he looks towards you, “How often were you screaming his name?”
“Funny, I don’t use his nickname during sex,” he turns his face to glare at you, “What? You’re the one bringing it up. There’s video evidence to prove it.”
“Now, wer’re fucking talking,” you clear your throat, glancing down at the baby who was still trying to reach behind her. “We’re freaking talking. How about tonight…after I say my piece, we watch it while Cherry and I take you apart.”
“Dadadada!” She squeals, trying to look between you and Robert, squealing even louder before grunting. “No no!”
“Hey, Baby Girl,” Cherry gives you a quick kiss to your temple, and when you and Robert turn around it is blatantly obvious why your daughter is grunting at him. “I would like for you guys to meet Elena.”
“No no! My dada!” Reaching out his hands towards the baby, she slaps his hand away looking over at the woman. “My!”
“Oh, don’t be like that, come here,” she shakes her head no, clinging more onto Robert, and you don’t know how to feel. Who was this woman? Where did she come from? And she just pissed you off looking at her because she was making Sundae upset. “Sundae, baby, come here.”
“No no! Ehh!” Sticking out her tongue she blows a raspberry over at the woman. Giving her a kiss to her chubby cheeks, you completely avoid looking at her, turning your body into Robert’s. “Dada?” Sundae pouts, and Elena looks between the three of you baffled.
“You didn’t say you had a kid,” ugh, you didn’t even like her voice. It was grating on your nerves. Cloying in the sound. Like nails on a chalkboard.
“She’s fucking mine,” you give Robert a little pinch, but still are thankful he spoke up. He didn’t care. All he cared about was letting people know who you and Sundae belonged to. “She’s confused because I was in prison. Got it overturned because a nasty…freaking crooked cop was planting…freaking evidence on my case. Cherry boy here, he kept my Pretty Girl safe. She was pregnant with my child. You know, standard stuff. He…freaking protected her. And took care of her, didn’t you?”
“Not here, Robert,” Cherry warns him. Still trying to get Sundae’s attention that was hiding her face from him. “Sunny, won’t you let me hold you?” She shakes her head no, and you want him to know that she had been waiting on him. Had been watching the door every time it opened. Had a happy squeal stop the moment she realized it was not him. But right now, he didn’t deserve that.
“Baby?”
“Babe, why don’t we get us a beer,” Elena pompously answers. You didn’t like anything about this woman. But Robert was the one who’s anger was growing wilder every second. You and Sundae were uncomfortable in your own home.
Cherry brought an outsider here, and his baby and his Pretty Girl were…well, you were both jealous. He could see it in your eyes. Feel it in the way you tried to ignore Cherry and this woman. Robert wants to laugh, all except for the part that you and his daughter were not happy. This he couldn’t have.
He watches Cherry being practically dragged outside by this girl, and even Cherry was looking back at Sundae. You are a grown woman, but he did not like that little girl refusing to be held by him. It hurt deeper than he could have ever fathomed, and even the way you were refusing to meet his eyes hurt him in the pit of his stomach.
“Pretty Girl, I’m going to go outside. Come on.”
“Give me a minute,” you answer softly, looking over at your daughter who had her bottom lip puckered out. Hurting you was one thing, hurting the most precious thing in your life was something completely different. Sundae didn’t deserve to feel left out in her home. She was too young to worry about feeling jealous, especially when it was concerning Cherry.
“Mama,” she buries her face in your chest, and you hate that woman. Pissed off at Cherry, but you hate that woman. Even thought about asking Robert to take care of the situation, but that would be cruel. He would do it. You didn’t know anything about this woman, other than you just didn’t like her. Didn’t like how she was touching him. You told Robert this was a bad idea, and this was proving it. “Mama, out!”
“I know, sweetheart, you want to go outside. Come on.”
“Dada?” She tilts her head to the side, giving you a pitiful little grin, and you wonder how Cherry could do this to her. You were one thing. He didn’t leave the other night on good terms, but Sundae?
Walking outside, her eyes scan the backyard, whining a moment when she spots that woman sitting in Cherry’s lap, and you have to remind yourself that he’s not yours. “Mama, dune,” Sundae tells you, reaching for your face. You look around a moment, and just didn’t feel comfortable with her crawling around with all these people. She could get trampled on. Had it only been Cherry like you wanted, she could have played in her space, “Dada!”
Her yell was more distressed than anything, and caught the attention of the right person. Cherry looks at the woman, and politely pushes her off as he makes his way to you, leaving the woman behind, and every step makes Sundae’s smile get even bigger. Her chunky little legs kick around, until he holds out his hands, and takes her in his arms. “I think she’s jealous,” you state as he holds her close to his chest. Rocking himself back and forth. He missed her as well.
“Is she the only one?” You glare at him. He was being unfair. You wanted to talk to him, and to Robert, just not with all these people. “I see.”
“Cherry, it’s not like that.”
“Then tell me what it’s like? Tell me why it’s fair that I was there during the pregnancy, I was there when we brought her home, I was there raising her with you, and then Robert comes home, and…”
“He is her father, and I love him. I can’t just,” you pause a moment as you start to get upset, looking towards Robert who was nursing a beer, and stands up to come closer to you. “He’s a part of my life.”
“Yes, and you’ve made that clear. And I’m not in that equation anymore. You got what you needed out of me.”
“Now, wait a fucking minute,” Robert grunts as he walks beside the three of you, “That’s not…can we talk after the fucking party party?”
“We’re talking now. You both used me. And I have…I developed,” he looks at Robert regretfully, because the last thing he wants is to insult him, but he had enough. This was silly, this back and forth. And he was the third wheel. “I developed feelings for you and Sundae. And as soon as he comes home, I’m thrown out,” you shake your head no, already feeling your heart breaking, because this wasn’t true. This was a bad idea.
“And I can’t watch you two. I can’t pretend that I don’t want to be a part of it, and you…you’re never going to allow that, Robert.”
“I never fucking said that. Can we wait until after the fucking party?” You give him a little squeeze of his hand, trying to remind him that Sundae was around. “No, I’m talking to him how I fucking talk. This needs to be done in goddamn private.”
“Then you should have asked for just me. I’m moving on,” he gives Sundae a hard kiss to her cheek. Extending her back to you, but she cries reaching for him. A steady dadadadadada flowing off her lips. “I’m not your daddy.”
“Dada!” She screeches when you grab her. Her body flailing around trying to get back in his arms.
“You’re leaving a fucking baby?” Robert shouts at him as he heads back to that woman. “She’s fucking screaming for you.”
“Then deal with her! She’s your daughter. Not mine, remember?” Now you were the one crying. Walking into the house, and into your bedroom. Removing yourself and your distraught baby from the situation. “It’s time for you to start standing up for your family.”
“And it’s time for you to stop being a fucking pansy ass mother fucker!”
“Blame me,” he grabs Elena’s hand, walking to the gate, instead of going through the house. He didn’t want to hear Sundae. Didn’t want to rush to that baby and hold her until her tears stopped. Could almost see her starting to hold her breath because she was so upset. “Whatever you need to do so you can’t be at fault, huh?”
“You better shut your goddamn mouth. I was going to fucking tell you something.”
“Then fucking tell me!” Cherry drops Elena’s hand, holding his arms out as he stares at Robert. “Tell me! What the hell do you even have to say? Yeah,” Cherry lets out an annoyed laugh, “That’s what I thought. Choked. If you’ve got something to say, say it.”
“She loves you!”
“Which one?” Robert takes a heaving breath, looking around at his backyard. He couldn’t admit this to Cherry, so what made him think he could admit to everyone here? You were right. This was a bad idea. “Go on, tell me? Which fucking one, Freezy? Is it the baby that calls me daddy, or is it your…fuck off! I don’t fucking need this shit. Let’s go!” He doesn’t bother grabbing Elena’s hand as he stomps out of the yard.
Robert looks around at the guests who were still completely silent, waiting on whatever it was that was going to happen. All of them frozen, and scared to move. “Get the fuck out of my mother fucking house!”
He picks up a table, tilting it back as bags of chips crash to the ground. “Out! Everybody fucking out!” No one wanted to be on the other side of Robert’s wrath. Everyone scurries off, while Robert wails fuck up at the sky. Wanting to throw a beer bottle, but Sundae played out here. Wanted to shoot something, but there were no contracts.
He was confused. Cherry was the only exception. He loved Cherry in his way, too. But you were just as in love with Cherry as he was you. Both of you were struggling to admit what was going on, and Robert was too confused on how to get the two of you together. “Fuuuck!” He screams again. He didn’t know. Didn’t know what to do or how to make it right.
He hated seeing his baby girl reach for Cherry, screaming for him as he walked away. Now he was pissed because Cherry hurt two people; you and his daughter. Cherry was either going to talk to the two of you like a man, or Cherry was going to be gone forever. This would not happen again.
He trudges back in the house, going into the bedroom to see you holding a sniffling baby. “Let me hold her,” he says softly, and Sundae does go to him easily. Her little lip trembles with every sniffle she makes as he holds her on his chest. “There there, darling. It’s going to be okay. Pretty Girl, I’m going to make this right. Man to man. Just me and…him,” Sundae takes a few staggered breaths, smacking her lips, and she rubs her hands over her eyes. “Is her sleepy? Her needs her little ice cream cone.”
There was something too adorable about seeing Robert baby talk to his little baby girl. Rocking her as he walks around, trying to calm her, and you get up to get her stuffed ice cream cone. Giving him a moment to bond with his daughter as he kisses around her head. He would make it right. You and Sundae were not going to be upset again. Cherry was the perfect accompaniment to your odd family. He was in fact, the cherry on top.
