Decorative Sunday
These plates are from Ornamental Architecture in the Gothic, Chinese and Modern Taste, a collection of 54 engravings by the British engraver John Couse (fl. 1759-1764) from the designs of Charles Over, printed in London for the print and map seller Robert Sayer (1725-1794) in 1758. Other than the plates, the volume includes only a few pages of very minimal descriptions for each plate. We don't know much about Charles Over, but we do know that this volume was produced during the height of British interest in Chinese architectural and landscape design of the 1750s, that also saw several similar publications during the decade. In this book, Over seems to be drawing parallels between Western (and especially British) Gothic style and Chinese designs as they were known to him from descriptions and representations.
The Chinese craze of this period in British national life became deeply opposed by Horace Walpole's Gothic sensibilities, particularly in his 1780 treatise, On Modern Gardening, which he started in the 1750s, and as displayed in his estate at Strawberry Hill.
