"People always ask me where Bob found the many subjects for his work, and I still tell them “just look around you – there is inspiration everywhere.” Bob never ran out of ideas, and his visits to Western Australia simply expanded his vocabulary. Here in Perth we have racing friends, friends who are teachers, artists and shopkeepers. We lived for a few months in Fremantle, long enough to call it “Freo” and to be treated as “locals”. We visited Perth often, enjoying the galleries, shopping and often just sitting in King’s Park looking at the passing scene. We travelled up North and enjoyed sunsets on the beach at Broome, and made friends with a local pearl diving family, with Jimmy Possum’s partner, and with a former camel-driver. It was a home away from our own home, and it was always a pleasure to come back. Some of these works were done in Bob’s studio in Fremantle, some of the subjects (like the girl and mother) were a family we saw as we drove across the Nullarbor, with a child who did homework in a café at every stop. Being the wife of such an observant man also helped me greatly with writing". -Jennifer Dickerson.
