PASSING TRIBUTE TO DICKERSON LEGACY
Robert Dickersonās The Businessmen (1997). The synthetic polymer paint on canvas painting was gifted to the State Art Collection, Art Gallery of WA, by the Dickerson family.
The family of Robert Dickerson has donated one of the Australian artistās works to the Art Gallery of WA ahead of an exhibition at Gallows Gallery.
His widow Jennifer Dickerson has given the gallery the 1997 acrylic on canvas painting The Businessmen under the Commonwealth Governmentās Cultural Gifts Program.
Dickerson, who died last October aged 91, was best known for his blank- faced chiaroscuro figures with long noses and dark eyes in settings much like inner-city Sydney where he grew up. He was a co-founder of the 1950s figurative artistic push The Antipodeans with Arthur Boyd, John Perceval and Charles Blackman.
Living on the south coast of New South Wales, he was painting almost until his death of cancer. Asked a few years ago how he continued to produce work at a pace which would put some artists in the shade, he said: āWhatās the point in living if youāre not working hard?ā
Dickerson was a regular visitor to WA and had a great affection for Fremantle, having driven across the Nullarbor in 1997 to spend three months in the port city.

His son Sam, who runs Sydneyās Dickerson Gallery, and Mrs Dickerson have worked with Gallows Galleryās Kathryn Stafford on an exhibition of 35 paintings and works on paper titled Passing By. It will be opened by AGWA curator of contemporary Australian paintings Jenepher Duncan.
āBob never ran out of ideas and his visits to WA simply expanded his vocabulary,ā Mrs Dickerson said. āHere in Perth we have friends in the racing industry and others who are teachers, artists and shopkeepers.ā
āSome of these works were done in Bobās Fremantle studio. Some of the subjects, such as the girl and mother, were a family we saw as we drove across the Nullarbor, with a child who did homework in a cafe at every stop.ā
Robert Dickerson: Passing By opens at Gallows Gallery, Mosman Park, on Thursday at 6.30pm and runs until August 7. Details: gallows gallery.com

"People always ask me where Bob found the many subjects for his work, and I still tell them ājust look around you ā there is inspiration everywhere.ā Bob never ran out of ideas, and his visits to Western Australia simply expanded his vocabulary. Here in Perth we have racing friends, friends who are teachers, artists and shopkeepers. We lived for a few months in Fremantle, long enough to call it āFreoā and to be treated as ālocalsā. We visited Perth often, enjoying the galleries, shopping and often just sitting in Kingās Park looking at the passing scene. We travelled up North and enjoyed sunsets on the beach at Broome, and made friends with a local pearl diving family, with Jimmy Possumās partner, and with a former camel-driver. It was a home away from our own home, and it was always a pleasure to come back. Some of these works were done in Bobās studio in Fremantle, some of the subjects (like the girl and mother) were a family we saw as we drove across the Nullarbor, with a child who did homework in a cafĆ© at every stop. Being the wife of such an observant man also helped me greatly with writing". -Jennifer Dickerson. Dickerson Gallery is proud to announce @johnwitzig's solo show 'FROM THE BACKSHED' Photographs 1964-1978, previewing this Saturday June 11 at #DickersonGallery. Exhibition runs officially from June 14th-July 9th 2016. āWhen your gallery asks if youāre interested in a spot three weeks from whatever the date was, the answer is āYESā⦠always. Thereās no time to get prints done and framed, so what you can include depends on what you have on hand. It means that you take down the two prints that you have in the guest room; you dig out a couple hiding behind other stuff in the office⦠and then this is where the shed really comes in. For much of the past two years Iāve been concerned with the Arcadia exhibition that began life at the National Portrait Gallery in August 2014, and then travelled to regional galleries in Geelong and the Tweed. Thereās a considerable overlap between that exhibition and this collection, but some of those prints were 2 metres wide or high, and theyāre in the shed now too. This group of prints is a return to a more domestic scaleā¦plus a couple of other images I didnāt know were in the shed until now.ā - John Witzig (at Dickerson Gallery)
JOHN WITZIG ON HIS NEW SHOW 'FROM THE BACK SHED'
Full name: John Witzig Age: 72 in July How old were you when you first started shooting? Probably 16 or 17 with a borrowed camera and telephoto lens. Then I shared a cheap camera and that didnāt end well. Within a couple of years I had a Praktica and a Tamron 400 mm lens. This was not high-quality photographic equipment. Favourite surf break to shoot? Probably a break called Spooky which is immediately north of Angourie in northern NSW. It was predictable which was very helpful when I was shooting with the little Nikonos underwater camera. I got lucky shooting there. What was your motivation to become a photographer? Iād been just slightly obsessed by black and white images since my early teenage years, so it was logical to want to take pictures. I knew a couple of the good surfing photographers at the time and it didnāt look too mysterious. Who/What are your main sources of inspiration? Why? Some of the photographic greats like Cartier Bresson and Salgardo for sure⦠and there have always been some good people shooting surfing. I love wonderful photographs. What would you say is the most discerning characteristic of your work/style? Why? My archive basically covers about 15 years from the mid-1960s. I think that it has coherence, and thatās useful. The pictures that I like best are the ones of the world around surfing, and these days theyāre being seen through a social documentary prism. Thatās quite rewarding. Describe your practice in 3 words. It was fun. What is your goal as an artist? The āaā word isnāt one that I use. I enjoy curating the pictures that I shot all those years ago. Do you feel the pressure to constantly make new works? None at all What are your other passions? Art, food and wine and conversation, reading, walking on the beach⦠beauty. Some advice for young, future artists? This comes from a Q&A that I did for Red Bull recently but I donāt think that I can express it better: Just persist and follow your instincts, rather than whatever the latest fad is⦠itās sure to be gone before you get it right. Oh, and accept luck gratefully when it comes your way. Take risks and accept the consequences when you blow it (because you will). Give the world a wry smile and jump right back into it.
We've just wrapped some beautiful prints at the gallery. ..Come in this weekend to see our new selection of etchings by #RobertDickerson. Open Friday and Saturday 11am-5pm (closed Sunday). #Art #Etchings #Prints (at Dickerson Gallery)
