Still personally one of my most favorite paintings, I was asked to paint Flight Over Fantasyland in celebration of the new Fantasyland at Magic Kingdom. The tricky part was that the new Fantasyland wasn’t actually open yet ... it was still under construction. And, contrary to popular belief, I wasn’t given a special look-see pass by Disney. I was as in the dark as everyone else who anxiously awaited the reveal. So, to paint a place I’d never seen, I relied on drawings of plans that were publicly released by Disney and also snapshots taken from the air by folks who posted their pics online. It was definitely a bit guerrilla to say the least. The painting was released and a few mo the later the new Fantasyland officially opened. I was happy (elated actually) to see that I got a lot of things right and interpreted only minor things incorrectly. And even those minor things added to the charm, I felt anyway. Beast’s Castle is there, the train is there, Ariel’s attraction is there, the double bigtop tent is in the distance ... And of course, Dumbo is flying at the height of Cinderella’s castle, so you get a small glimpse at the peek. How many other Fantasyland goodies can you spot? Flight Over Fantasyland is available as a limited edition giclee.
