A weird and whimsical journey, spanning a couple of dimensions, John Dies at the End is a trippy, amusing, surreal film that will have your head spinning by the tale's end. Based on the book by humorist David Wong, John follows two twenty-something slackers are endowed with pseudo-psychic powers, thanks to a supposed drug know as 'the soy sauce'. They saddle up to do battle with evil forces in an effort to save the world from interdimentional body snatchers. At least I THINK that's what's going on. Combine Naked Lunch with The Thing, then mash that together with some b-movie style and out pops John. If you have seen the cult favorite Bubba Ho-Tep or you remember the horror classic Phantasm or the awesomely cheesy 80s classic Beastmaster, it's the same director, Don Coscarelli, so maybe that will give you an idea of John's vibe. The storyline is a maze of past, present and future events seen through the eyes of Dave (John's bestest buddy), played with a wonderfully confused confidence by the relatively unknown Chase Williamson. Add in our John played by swimmingly by one Rob Mayes, plus the nice bonus of some delicious supporting turns by Paul Giamatti (as an investigative reporter) and Clancy 'Mr. Crabs' Brown (as a famous psychic) and John shapes up well. It really is quite a maze... just when you think you might have some part of John figured out, you are blindsided by yet another twist. This plot weaves back and forth like a half baked field mouse on psychedelic mushrooms... and this my friends, is the inherent beauty of John Dies at the End. One may never figure it out and perhaps complete confusion is the filmmakers ultimate goal. John Dies at the End is fantastically strange, unorthodox fun... worth the time of sci-fi, horror film buffs everywhere.
