Those who follow my Facebook page will already know that I've added Aloy from @guerrillagames Horizon Zero Dawn to my cosplay list the other day. Now it's a matter of deciding which outfit to cosplay. Or both maybe 😂 I had hesitated about cosplaying Aloy initially as I wanted to make sure she is a character I could relate to - and she is in so many ways. Tumblr Course Post #8: The Future of Automation

In Four Futures, one of the many things that Peter Frase talks about is automation. There is a certain amount of uncertainty regarding robots being used to replace jobs. This fear, as he correctly points out in the book, is nothing new.

However, this fear doesn’t have to be limited to just the use of robots. For example, before refrigeration became common, there used to be milkmen and icemen, who would sell or deliver those products to homes on a regular basis. However, once refrigerators became a successful product, those jobs suddenly disappeared. This is what economists call, “creative destruction,” where a piece of technology winds up rendering the job of someone else moot, and those jobs disappear, and then, ideally, different jobs would pop up somewhere else.

But then, some people argue that this new kind of automation is different. I mean, people want to communicate with other people, right? Do people want to have their food order taken by a machine?

Well when it comes to more menial jobs, machines are already starting to replace workers.

McDonald’s has already started implementing order kiosks at some of their locations.

A hotel in Japan uses robot dinosaurs to check you in at the front desk, and another robot that takes your bags up to your room. So, at the very least, some businesses are definitely experimenting with it.

But that raises the question, what does this mean for the average worker? Is it possible that many entry level jobs will soon have their spots taken by machines? And theoretically, if enough jobs become replaced by robots, this does raise the question as to whether or not, as the “creative destruction” economists say, more jobs will arise. But that all depends on how widespread automation and robot workers become.

It’s hard to say how the average consumer will respond to it. Of course, the idea that your order has a higher chance of being correct, because you’re the one putting your order into the computer is attractive. Of course, the business owners would love it, because they would only have to pay for the initial cost, the electricity it takes to run it, and then any repairs that pop up, which could conceivably be much cheaper than having to pay a worker, and on top of that, you don’t have to worry about breaks.

Some prognosticators of course say that everything is going to become automated, or on the other side of the fence, they say that people will want to interact with other people, and that robot workers and automation is not going to last. Personally, I think the reality is going to be somewhere in between. Some businesses will have those kiosks and automation with limited human workers, and some businesses will have very little; it would probably depend on the size of the business. Who knows; maybe some customers will prefer the automation, while others prefer the human, so certain kinds of businesses will respond to the consumer demand. 

As to whether or not more jobs will come out of this, that is hard to say. However, the only thing I am sure is this; automation will be a part of the future, and I don’t think there’s any chance it’s going anywhere, at least not in the immediate future, so this is something that we’ll just have to wait and see.
