So I actually recently broke things off with my ex-fp/bf and the advice you gave the anon was exactly what I did. I actually tried to leave them months ago and they sucked me back in. Anyway, for the anon: it is not easy to cut ties but a good clean break is best. If talking to them is too difficult or tempting, but you dont want to just disappear, I wrote my ex a letter. Blocking them, talking to friends, and just finding ways to distract yourself helps so much. Good luck and best wishes!
