Robert Pattinson, Willem Dafoe, The Lighthouse We wouldn't normally pick two performances from the same movie, but it's hard to separate these two. Robert Eggers' wonderfully weird psychological horror The Lighthouse features Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe in almost every scene, and the brilliance of each performance is entirely reliant on its interplay with the other. Dafoe has the louder, more verbose role, as the experienced older Thomas, who has spent decades manning a lighthouse, while Pattinson's mysterious Ephraim is more guarded and reserved. But the relish with which both actors deliver Eggers' archaic but often filthy and hilarious dialogue is a joy to witness. First, they wanted to close Laagna-tee for four weeks, but as a result of constructive negotiations with the city, they reduced the need for using Laagna-tee, combining temporary closure of the road and redirection of transport. Changes in traffic management will take place between July 10th and 28th 2019. It helped that this new Batman needed to conform to a defined age bracket. He is written as around 30 years old, and the story is neither another rehashing of his origin nor the tale of a seasoned crimefighter ruling Gotham City. He is Bruce Wayne still trying to find his footing on his way to becoming the genius detective. Reeves is said to have considered Pattinson, 33, early on in the process even though no outreach was made. Reeves didn’t even know if the actor wanted the part. Since Pattinson shot to fame as a heartthrob vampire in the Twilight films, he has built a solid résumé in smaller, well-reviewed independent films like Good Time and Maps to the Stars. He has assiduously avoided big studio franchise films. But that fact actually made him more attractive to Reeves and the executive team at Warner Bros. Pattinson and Hoult became the only contenders, and during the week of May 20, when Pattinson flew in from Cannes, both shot screen tests in costume on the Burbank lot. Each had a pre-negotiated deal in place, ready to go into effect for whoever had the final contingency lifted, the screen test. “Reeves wanted very specific things,” says one insider. “He knew what he was looking for.” Reeves and Warners execs took the week after Memorial Day to deliberate their choices, and by Thursday night, made the calls to the actors. Rob portraying the character Ephraim Wislow, a former lumberjack trying to start fresh after a troubled past, is a man of few words. The director Robert Eggers required the two actors to rehearse together in order to build a sense of pace. Eggers: "Pattinson was great in rehearsals, however he found the process frustrating. Dafoe felt very comfortable in this environment, but Pattinson did not, but that's the same with his character, he's not comfortable in his environment - I think this friction helped Rob to create his intense and transformative performance. It was incredible to see him twist himself into agonizing places and then burst with fury. He works harder than anyone and his brilliance comes from his deep commitment and his physical precision." Eggers: "THE LIGHTHOUSE shot for 32 days in March and April 2018 in and around the Southern tip of Nova Scotia. It was a difficult location the weather was extreme and we were freezing cold. In addition to authentic storm conditions, the actors had to contend supplemental wind and rain. It's not fun when it's 30 degrees (F) and you are wearing heavy oilskins and there's wind and rain blowing across Cape Forchu. It was tough for the actors. Robert's role was more physically challenging while Willem Dafoe's role was verbally demanding."
