CRINGE ASS YUME ART. AHHH AHHHHHH AHH AHHHHHHH
ref under cut
“My uncle was a scientist. But, he believed that love was real… A kind of… natural phenomenon. He believed that love could outlive death.”
- Megan Sixsmith
The Floor is Lava The Soul Crushing Ship That’s Going to Destroy My Fragile Heart.
It's been six months, and I'm still fucking sad about Cloud Atlas. Frobisher and Sixsmith shared such a pure love, and the fact that I never saw them reunite makes my heart hurt every time I think about it. DAMN YOU DAVID MITCHELL.
Sixsmith x Frobisher Things that break my heart. (spoilers)
That cute height difference.
They’re opposites.
Six is logical, reserved, tall, relatively well off, and a physicist.
Frobisher is more emotional, shorter, with dark hair, and has a reputation as a thief and a whore but wants to be a composer.
The book implies they’ve known each other for a long time, They may have been childhood friends.
In the book, it’s explained that Frobisher’s family disowned him for his sexuality among other things. Six stays by his side and supports him when he has no one.
Frobisher is pretty sexually promiscuous, meanwhile, Six probably lost is virginity to Frobisher.
“You were my first love, and, if I’m honest, my last.”
Interestingly, Frobisher actually seems to be the most well spoken of the two. This could be in part from Six’s soft shy nature.
Sixsmith dreams about him and Frobisher destroying a room together. This can actually be pretty symbolic. It shows Sixsmith running into Frobisher and Frobisher convincing Sixsmith to live and cut loose.
Destroying the old antique figurines could represent Sixsmith, wanting to destroy all of these old things that are keeping them apart (expectations, society, life)
Their first kiss was under Corsican stars (Corse, which is an absolutely beautiful Mediterranean island between France and Italy. It’s literally so romantic!)
When they cuddle, Sixsmith is the little spoon.
Six is the only person Frobisher writes to while he’s away.
“My dearest Sixsmith” <- omgsbfjadjfhsad ^^
Even though Frobisher is the type of person that likes to sleep around, he goes out of his way to repeatedly tell Six that he’s wasn’t just sleeping with him. He loves him.
Frobisher tells Sixsmith that he is the sole love of his life.
Frobisher makes fun of Six’s sense of fashion, but also finds it incredibly endearing.
The thing Frobisher seems to love most about Six is his smile
Six smiles brightest when he’s looking at Frobisher.
Six is a fairly soft spoken shy man.
Frobisher makes him bold.
The way Sixsmith instantly puts a protective hand over Frobisher when someone comes knocking on thier door.
The way Frobisher calms Sixsmith’s worry with a gentle look and a reassuring touch.
The way Sixsmith watches as Frobisher gets dressed.
Six gives Frobisher his expensive vest because Frobisher ‘needs something of his to keep him company while he’s away.’
The moment Sixsmith senses something off in Frobisher’s letters, he immediately packs his bags, leaves his job, and travels across the country to find him.
Six almost found him on that balcony. Almost. He was so close.
Despite having little to go on, Six managed to track down the hotel Frobisher was staying at.
The realization on Six’s face when he saw that innkeeper wearing the vest he gave Frobisher. (Giving away belongs is a sign of suicide, and Six instantly knew something was very wrong).
Frobisher giving away the one thing he had left of SixSmith could be inferred as the last straw. He was already on a downward spiral, but symbolically letting go of Sixsmith was a final domino of his deciding to end his own life.
Six was just seconds away from Frobisher. He missed him by 30 seconds,
The panic on Six’s face when he hears the gun go off.
Six desperately scrabbling into Frobisher apartment hoping it’s not to late.
The expression on Six’s face when he finds Frobisher in the bathtub.
The fact he tried to wake Frobisher up to no avail.
He’s in absolute denial until his hand touches the back of Frobisher’s head when he tried to lift him.
The noise Six makes when he sees his hand drenched in blood.
They way he cradles him. Six collapses there and just hugs Frobisher as he cries for god knows how long.
Six never loved again. Frobisher was his first and only real love.
Even as an old man, Six sets aside time to reread the letters Frobisher wrote to him.
Sixsmith was reading Frobisher’s letters right before he died.
Six dies the same way Frobisher did.
“Eternally yours, RF.”
Frobisher signs his last letter with ‘Sunt Lacrimae Rerum’ which is Latin for ‘there are tears for things, there is pity for misfortune, there are tears in things, or life is tragic.’
The face Sixsmith made when he saw Lisa had a comet scar like Frobisher (This also is what insinuates that part of Frobisher’s soul might be in her.)
“...Someone I cared about very much”.
Frobisher tells Sixsmith he’ll be waiting for him in another life.
“I believe there is another world waiting for us Sixsmith, a better world, and I’ll be waiting for you there” <- this line is delivered so heartfelt and bittersweet that it literally hurts my soul every time I hear it.
Despite seeing them both reincarnated into different timelines, we don’t see them reunite.
Robert Frobisher (Cloud Atlas)
“My dear Sixsmith, I'm in desperate need of your help. I got hooked on a journal, written in 1849 by a dying lawyer during a voyage from a Pacific isle to San Francisco. Half the book is missing. It's completely killing me; a half-finished book is, after all, a half-finished love affair.”
My Dearest Sixsmith,
I do hope you will be able to find it in your heart to forgive me. Hated leaving you like that. Wasn't the goodbye I had in mind... Don’t let them say I killed myself for love. I’ve had my infatuations, but we both know in our hearts who is the sole love of my short bright life.
Robert Frobisher (Cloud Atlas)
“Didn’t think the view could be anymore perfect, until I saw that beat-up Trilby. Honsetly, Sixsmith, As ridiculous as that thing makes you look, I don’t believe I’ve ever seen anything more beautiful.”
