As I’ve made my way through this collection of body horror, I’ve noticed several times a connection with a company called Lifelong Corporation. In “Neoton,” as soon as I saw mention of Lifelong Corp, I had the same reaction as anytime I saw the name or logo of the Umbrella Corporation in Resident Evil. 😂 This story is told from alternating perspectives of a married couple, Elijah and Tara. Elijah is testing a new technologically advanced game, a game you plug into to enter. Tara comes home from work, fed up with being overworked and exhausted - spoiling for a fight, unplugs Elijah. What happens next is why you won’t EVER find this girl testing out anything even REMOTELY like this, should it be invented in my lifetime. Okay, this is the story that has officially turned me into a fan. I’m a little over halfway through this collection of body horror short stories and I love that the characters acknowledge that things are off and unusual - they don’t accept these oddities as normal behavior or even accept them easily. Also, @robwriteshorror uses excellent word choices that make him stand out a bit, just little things like “confectionary” instead of just regular old “candy” - I love little things like this, being someone who reads so much. “Vending Machine” is another story that throws a little dig at the greedy and impersonal healthcare industry, while also providing an interesting, yet creepy af story that will keep me from using a vending machine for a long, long, LONG time. 😂 #FleshedOut #RobUlitski #BodyHorror #Horror #ShortStory #Reading #AmReading https://www.instagram.com/p/Cjapm30r8FA/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Back in the FLESHED OUT collection this morning! I read “Crystalline” by Rob Ulitski. This macabre tale tells of a life altering event in the lives of young Helena and her brother James. James suffered an unfortunate accident when he was younger and requires around the clock care, which is provided by Helena. This story has its horror and will make you turn your head sideways and squint at parts - but what really stands out is the suffering of the characters due to healthcare. James’s condition was getting worse and Helena was struggling to care for him full time and pay the exorbitant costs. There was one instance in which the doctor wouldn’t return Helena’s call until she caught up the payments on her payment plan. Over everything else, that was the most disgusting. Because it’s true. And that’s the true horror of this tale. Oh…and the saying “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend”?
