The Lunar Rover is tested for loading & deployment from the Lunar Module in preparation for an Apollo 15-17 moon landing. The LRV weighed 480 pounds on 🌎 & 80 pounds on the 🌔. It carried double its weight & traversed at a top speed of 8.6mph, though Gene Cernan exceeded that to 11.2mph on Apollo 17. The LRV’s design had a central joystick 🕹 which the astronaut could move about despite wearing a bulky glove. Must’ve been fun.

Set to investigate the ringed planet 🪐. Scientists run Cassini through a series of tests prior to its launch to Saturn. The mission was a collaboration between @nasa, the European Space Agency & the Italian Space Agency 🇮🇹. Cassini was the 4th probe in human history to visit Saturn & the 1st to enter its orbit. The robotic probe consisted of both the Cassini part by NASA & the Huygens lander by the ESA. It landed on Titan, which is Saturn's largest moon. Launched in Oct ‘97, Cassini was active for nearly 20 years.

The 569 pound (258kg) space probe launched that same year & became the first craft to visit Jupiter. P10 was also the 1st of 5 probes to achieve escape velocity to leave the Solar System. There were 2 series of missions in the Pioneer Program. The first ran from 1958-60 & was successful in sending a satellite to fly by the moon but unsuccessful in attempts to achieve lunar orbit. The 2nd Pioneer Program ran for nearly 30 years, between 1965-92. P10 became 1st to cross the asteroid belt & to fly by & send back close up photos of Jupiter. Radio communication with P10 stopped in Jan/03 due to loss of electric power in its radio transmitter at 12 billion km from Earth. Incredible service from this spacecraft!
