Nine years ago today my new 2015 Triumph Rocket X (#018) arrived at the dealer. He sent me a couple of photos once they had assembled it. There was snow on the ground but I stopped by after work to see it anyways. I rode it home a few days later, still some snow on the ground but the roads were dry.

This Rocket, named The Beast, has been that one motorcycle for me. I bonded with this motorcycle like no other. It is still my favorite.

I now have a new 2023 Triumph Rocket 3 GT. It is a better motorcycle in several objective ways. But my first R3 will always be my favorite.

It has been three years since The Beast’s transmission shit itself for the second time. I let it sit for two years before making the decision to accept the expense of a second transmission rebuild. It has been almost a year since I dropped it off at the shop. The Beast came home today, fully rebuilt, many bits and pieces replaced, and the dog gears (the offending point of failure) sent to a speed shop for back cutting. The ride home was like fucking magic!

I left the Tiger at the shop. I never did fall in love with that bike. They have accepted it as a trade for a new Rocket 3 GT, to be delivered in December (hopefully earlier). I’m happy to be rid of the Tiger. Too damn tall. I would complain about the weight, but I just ordered my second Rocket. But the higher center of gravity just always felt awkward to me.

If I knew how to make videos I would make some cheesy romantic music video with my Rocket! I am that fucking happy!

Simply because the sound of me pulling away from the house on my Rocket sounds amazing on the security camera.

I have my new Tiger in for its first service today and naturally I gravitated towards the Rocket 3 GT on the showroom floor. My Rocket has been down with a transmission problem for over a year. It just feels like the right time to trade in. But a little niggle in the back of my head says it is irresponsible to buy another new bike so soon. But, really, is any motorcycle purchase responsible?
