– ‘ GIVE ME A LITTLE CREDIT FOR TRYING, OKAY ? ’ PAIGE HUFFS, one hand on her hip as if to punctuate the appropriate amount of sass. ‘ besides, marco didn’t put me up to anything – ’ not totally true, he might have mentioned how he planned not to return to the house because of a certain negative nellie, though he also might have put it with a little more concern. and then paige had bet him ten dollars that she could successfully get ellie to leave her room, which had seemed easy until the moment she actually stood in her doorframe. ‘ – i just noticed your usual cloud of doom and gloom was looking even doomier and gloomier than usual and thought it’d be good for us to do something together ! whatever you want, my treat. movies ? shopping ? bowling ? you name it. i know it may not seem like it because i’m so perfect, but i am actually pretty well-versed in this whole coping with break-ups thing. ’

– HE NEVER MAKES HER FEEL LIKE A BURDEN. it sounds simple, but . . . it’s not quite as easy to come by as it sounds, paige has realized. they’d been talking so long she didn’t realize that pretty much everyone else had already left until now. with paige’s parents gone for the weekend, she’d invited over so many people with the goal of not being alone, but underestimated how anxious a party would make her. she shifts slightly on the couch, laying on her side with her head propped up, looking at jt softly in a moment that he’s not looking back. ‘ thanks, ’ paige speaks into the quiet, ‘ i’ll get some blankets and stuff. ’ the hall closet feels like miles away right now, when realistically it’s just a few paces. there’s an inhale of breath as she pulls herself together and sits up, swinging her legs over the side of the couch. she touches her head when she looks over at him, ‘ okay, how’s my hair ? wait, actually, i’m not sure that i want you to answer that. speak carefully. ’

– THE COUNTDOWN BEGINS AND MARCO dashes off to find dylan, leaving . . . just ellie. paige has had a fair amount of champagne already, nursing an empty glass between her hands as the seconds tick down on the clock, inching closer to midnight. it’s not as if you like her, after all, it’s ellie nash, bringer of darkness, purveyor of snarky remarks, attitude of total doom and gloom. the fact that you hang out at all is by pure happenstance, the crux of a plethora of mutual friends, because you couldn’t be more different.

five, four . . . 

and still, the countdown continues and paige makes no real effort to move, locked on to the redhead’s hazel-eyed gaze. she inhales sharply – it’s decision time, either make a beeline to the cute guy that she was talking to earlier or . . . rock ellie nash’s world, so to speak. her eyes drift to ellie’s lips.

three, two . . . 

it’s definitely, definitely the champagne, but she acts on impulse – it’s only two steps to close the distance between them, a result of the closeness they’d been hovering between for the past few minutes, actually, perhaps inadvertently. still, paige michalchuk isn’t going to do anything, and that includes a midnight kiss to ring in the new year.

lips parted ever so slightly, her free hand resting on the side of ellie’s neck in a deliberate motion. it’s a little softer than she expects, from a girl with such a harsh personality, and before paige can register the moment further, she pulls away. “ happy new year, eleanor. for good luck, ” grin is cheeky, wearing a little less of the bubblegum pink gloss than she was moments before. she’s got to try and seem unfazed by such a thing, her pride won’t let her reveal that ellie got her heart racing, even just a little. the tip of her thumb drags along the side of mouth with a thoughtful huff, “ please tell me i’m not wearing any of your dollar-store lipstick. ”

– ‘ SERIOUSLY ? ’ PAIGE LOOKS UP FROM WHERE SHE’S SITTING on the edge of the front steps, wiping at the corner of her eye with the tip of her finger. ‘ or did you just make that up in an attempt to make me feel better ? ’ she adds with skepticism, eyes narrowed ever so slightly. it’s hard to live up to her usual level of sass when she feels like such a mess, but she’s not sure how to pull herself out of it : the official news that terri’s not coming back, in lieu of rick murray’s return. it’s something she still feels guilty over, and now powerless to stop.

paige sniffs. while jt’s presence is a comfort, it always has been, it’s also a reminder of something else she messed up. she’s been actively avoiding him ever since that night at her house, like distance would keep that impulse to kiss him from returning with vengeance. paige can still remember the look on his face when she rejected him . . . and then came the worst part, where she’d kind of missed the way he annoyed her. 

‘ why are you being so nice to me ? i mean, if anyone deserves to hate me lately . . . ’

– PAIGE HATES HOSPITALS. it’s nothing personal, just the sterilized smell, the off-white aesthetic, clearly in need of a new interior decorator, stat . . . they’re just so depressing, and the amount of friends she’s had to visit within these walls is a count that just seems to go UP as the years go by. her semester at banting has been enough of a disaster that she hadn’t really stopped to think about the disasters she was missing out at home – until now. it hadn’t really occurred to her how much jt had grown over the years until she has to see him look so small in a hospital bed. 

she also had maybe never really stopped to consider what their friendship actually meant to her until she got that phone call. still, jt probably knew that she’d show even before she did – he always seemed to know how much she liked having him around without paige ever having to admit it. 

he was there for her at one of her lowest points – how could she NOT be here now ? 

she doesn’t want to CRY, it’s not one of those occasions, but it is an overwhelming feeling to see him here like this, when she’s so used to his inability to sit still. it stings in the corner of her eyes, but she can’t look anywhere else but at him. she hopes he won’t call her out on it.

‘ i leave for ONE semester and this is what happens ? ’ the first words from her lips are, predictably, a lecture. ‘ you are so hopeless without me. ’ an exasperated sigh escapes her, though there’s a bit of truth to it – paige really does believe that if she’d been here, maybe she could have somehow prevented it. 

                            ‘ but i’m really, really glad you’re okay. ’
