A survey of new and recent work is scheduled for 2021 at American University. . An endlessly inventive painter active for nearly half a century, an uninhibited colorist, and a friend, a work like the extraordinary ‘Great Barrier Reef’ (2018), evidences her master brushwork and formal interests in color and scale with its large expanses of intense hues filling the canvas. . A 2016 recipient of an @awaw.award, @dianeburko #dianeburko, is a brilliant and highly engaged artist whose radical practice is driven by a deep concern with climate change, joining scientific expeditions in remote corners of the world to see firsthand the transformation of landscapes. . Burko began taking flights over the canyon country of the Southwest with Light and Space artist and avid pilot #jamesturrell in the 1970s; she subsequently made what art critic Carter Ratcliff called “silvery, bluish images of stone and sky…notched and folded forms of the canyon walls inflect the path of vision,” as in ‘First Flight with Jim Turrell’ (1977) the same year Turrell began his monumental project at @rodencrater #rodencrater, an extinct volcano in northern Arizona. . There’s something about Sunday nights that feel out of control for me. It’s the last few hours before another busy week and if I let myself think too far ahead, I get overwhelmed. I forget about this moment right now which is a gift and a chance to be present and joyful. When I look at this photo of Rodan Crater, I feel like it helps center me. James Turrell “More people have heard of me through Drake than anything else” - James Turrell, Artist. James Turrell (born May 6, 1943 in Los Angeles, California) is an American artist primarily concerned with light and space. Turrell is perhaps best known for his work in progress, 'Roden Crater', a natural cinder cone crater located outside Flagstaff, Arizona that he is turning into a massive naked-eye observatory. Turrell attended Pomona College, where his studies concentrated on psychology and mathematics. He later received a master’s degree in Art from Claremont Graduate School. In 1984 Turrell was a MacArthur Fellow. Turrell’s work has been widely acclaimed and exhibited since his first showing at the ‘Pasadena Art Museum’ in 1967, which established him a leader in the nascent ‘Light and Space’ movement. When he was 16 years old Turrell obtained a pilot's license. Later, registered as a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War, he ended up flying Buddhist monks out of Chinese-controlled Tibet. Some writers have suggested it was a CIA mission but Turrell called it "a humanitarian mission” and that he found "some beautiful places to fly”. For years he restored antique airplanes to support his "art habit”. James Turrell is a master of perception, light, colour and space. For the past 40 years, he has created breathtaking installations at sites around the world. These are his Swimming Pools.
