1866 MAP OF CINCINNATI, COVINGTON, NEWPORT & C. — Published in 1866 by Appleton & Co. — An important historical reference can be noted on this map as 1866 was the first year in which a bridge connecting Cincinnati to Covington would subtly appear on a map of The Queen City. At the time of this map’s publication construction of John Roebling’s bridge would have recently been completed. At 1,057 feet long, this masterpiece of mid-19th century engineering would be the longest suspension bridge in the world. This map also features a prominent cartouche designed by the cartographer, Edward Hall. These decorative emblems were once made to be an elaborate focal point for a map’s title, especially during the 17th and 18th century. However, over time cartouche designs became more simplified and less popular among the map-making community. #cincymapcollection #queencity #roeblingwednesday https://www.instagram.com/p/BofMWM3lIkL/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=gp4hbugsho9k
May 11th, 1872: Harper’s Weekly, original print — Only 5 years old at the time, the #roeblingbridge dominates the bustling Cincinnati riverfront in this feature illustration. At this time in the Queen City’s history, the very first professional baseball team — the Cincinnati Red Stockings — were 3 years old, the Cincinnati Orchestra was established and the iconic Cincinnati Music Hall would not be built for another 6 years. #roeblingwednesday https://www.instagram.com/p/Bn53Vs4F512/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=qt1yrpi7u5qd
