Old ones.
Happy Birthday to the Brooklyn Bridge, which opened on this day in 1883 for horse-drawn and rail traffic, pedestrians and cyclists! An engineering marvel, the 6,000-foot bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world when it opened, connecting the independent cities of New York and Brooklyn. Here are some quick facts about our favorite bridge: •The bridge took 14 years to build at a cost of $3.5 billion adjusting for inflation. •As workers got sick from Caisson's Disease (the bends) digging down to bedrock under the East River, they stopped at 80 feet. Bedrock was 107 feet down and as of today the 90,0000-ton Manattan side tower still rests on sand and mud. The bridge cost a penny to walk over when it first opened. •Cable cars, trolleys, and elevated trains crossed the bride from its opening until 1954 when it became reserved for vehicles. •Over 4,000 cyclists cross the bridge daily, even though the two-way bike path can be as narrow as 4 feet. Below are some of our favorite historic photos of the bridge, available for purchase on our website. Get 30% OFF for our Memorial Day Sale with code BRONX30. Summary: The SNU Cranes aren't exactly a baseball powerhouse, but Park Jimin doesn't care. He just wants to pull together enough players to field a team, get out on the diamond, and give it his all. If newly discovered pitching phenom Jeon Jungkook helps the Cranes break their years-long losing streak, well - that's just the icing on the cake, right?
This Jimin might be my favourite Jimin. So incredibly earnest and positive and kind. I love him so much.
Fortune:
Fortune magazine was originally created by Henry Robinson at the end of the great depression. This magazine was created for “wealthy and influential people” which is why it charged their readers an expensive yearly subscription fee of $10 per year at its conception. Featured in the January 1931 edition of the magazine is an article regarding the Roebling family and the steel wire cables they produced for both the Brooklyn and Hudson Bridges. The piece focuses on the history of the Roebling family with photographs and descriptions of their engineering feats. The Roebling business was originally started by John Augustus Roebling, an immigrant from Prussia who developed rope of twisted wires in 1841. In 1848, he moved his business from the Allegheny Mountains in Pennsylvania to Trenton, New Jersey wherein he began producing his wire rope cables for projects like the Niagara Gorge and the Brooklyn Bridge.
