"Roger's Theme"
The Features, EP release (1997)
Aside from the songs that were re-worked for the Mahaffey Sessions in 2000 ("Armani Suede" and "Paid to Think"), this is easily my favorite pre-Rollum Features track. I don't even know how this happened. It just started coming up when my iPod was on shuffle and I took to it. The song is a lot of fun and pretty much contains all the highlights of the five-piece Features lineup.
The song cruises along at midtempo, way relaxed and chill, and only takes a second to get even more relaxed in the bridge before freaking out in the chorus. Just like Pelham howls, this song is dynamite. I love the drum sound on this song, with almost every hit of the snare drum having that echo on it. Musically this is a great song, and lyrically it's a lot of fun. The way Pelham uses his entire range, going high at the end of lines, it makes it a fun song to sing along to. I don't really know how much this song has in common with bassist Roger Dabbs, who I assume is being referenced in the title, but I do know that Roger is pretty funky dude.
"Roger's Theme" was active in 1996 and was recorded here for the band's debut EP in 1997. The song was demoed again in 1998 for the Dortch Sessions before being dropped at some point between then and, I'm assuming, Rollum joining. Since I wasn't a fan of the song in 2003 when the band was doing the All-Request Show, I used all my power and votes to get "Jurley" played. "Roger's Theme" has, to my knowledge, not been played live in over a decade.
