The Who at Woodstock — August 17, 1969
The Who were originally scheduled to perform Saturday night, August 16, but Woodstock was running so far behind schedule that they didn’t take the stage until around 5:00 a.m. Sunday morning, August 17.
Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle, and Keith Moon tore through a marathon set that included a large portion of Tommy. One of the most iconic moments came during “See Me, Feel Me,” when the sun began to rise over the festival grounds as the band played.
Near the end of the set, The Who moved from “My Generation” into an extended instrumental improvisation that would eventually develop into “Naked Eye,” with Townshend stretching out on guitar over Moon’s explosive drumming.
After nearly two dozen songs, Townshend brought the performance to a dramatic close by smashing his Gibson SG against the stage and throwing it into the crowd.
By the time The Who walked offstage, Woodstock was already well into Sunday morning—and one of the festival’s most memorable performances was complete.

It's a damn shame that Who Are You will forever be remembered in the public consciousness merely as the CSI song, because the last verse (which is cut from the single edit, booooooo!) contains one of the best sets of lyrics that Pete Townshend ever wrote.
