Anyway we gotta end the duopoly that Rogers and Bell have over telecommunications in Canada
Rogers went out for like 18 hours on Friday, and several provinces were out of internet, phone, and debit services. Literally millions of people couldn’t work, couldn’t communicate, and couldn’t make debit purchases or withdraw money. I even heard some people couldn’t call 911 because this company was down. A clinic in Niagara had to cancel radiation appointments for cancer patients. I can’t even find a statement from them explaining wtf happened.
Not to mention that, because Rogers and Bell own most telecommunications in the country, our phone/internet/cable bills are off the charts. They can make up whatever prices they want because who else are we going to turn to? Some rinky dink local provider that may or may not have consistent coverage? Telus is really the only other competitor. There’s a Rogers-Shaw Communications merger planned so who knows what’s going to happen with Freedom Mobile.
I can’t help but laugh at this titanic fuckup but I’m so over getting railed by these two. There were warning signs for years that this is bad, but today’s massive outage should be a wake up call: one company should not have the power to disrupt millions of lives across one of the largest countries in the world.
