Medicine was her career, but Xavier’s was her passion. When Jean got the opportunity to take a few biology classes, she jumped at the chance, especially when Xavier gave the go ahead to give them a more thorough education in the way of the X-Men and what they were capable of. Opening up the doors in the children’s minds, carefully guiding them to their fears and helping them realise that the real potential didn’t come from their teachers or their friends but within themselves, that was what Jean considered to be the real use of telepathy. Years ago, she would’ve been lucky if she could provide that insight to one person. Now, she could touch and explore the minds of everyone in attendance in the classroom, dozens of students, leaving them buzzing with excitement as they left, chattering over each other.
Jean didn’t join in on their enthusiasm. She wished she could – it was exactly what she wanted to be doing, but something was niggling at the back of her mind, far more than usual. She could hear the Phoenix, but it was in her own voice. More. She – or it – wanted more.
Suddenly, Jean felt a familiar presence in the room. She looked up from the book she had been staring at on her desk (she hadn’t even been able to read the title, too preoccupied with her thoughts), and met Rogue’s eyes. “Sorry,” she said, sending her friend a tight smile. “I was someplace else there for a minute.” Jean took a breath, waiting for that voice to dim down before she spoke again. “That’s actually what I wanted to talk to you about.”
