Born in Srinagar in 1961, Bal began his career in 1986, after graduating from Delhi University with a degree in history and further honing his craft at the National Institute of Fashion Technology. He blazed a trail on the runway, seamlessly blending India’s traditional craftsmanship with bold, modern aesthetics. Known for his lavish shows and dramatic style, Bal’s creations featured luxurious fabrics like velvet and brocade, often adorned with his signature motifs of flowers and peacocks, which helped to redefine Indian couture on a global scale.
Bal was among the first Indian designers to make a mark internationally, dressing Hollywood icons such as Cindy Crawford, Uma Thurman, Pamela Anderson, and Naomi Campbell.
